Aerial image Ste Mere Eglise 1960 . . . . . . . .

Aerial shot from the internet taken in 1960, the museum in the top right corner hadn't been started as yet, neither was the now regular feature of the paratrooper dummy hanging from the church. Very few cars to be seen a couple in the square and a couple over on the left of the photo, the American cemetery in the town was to the left of the football field until it was removed to Omaha Beach area in 1947.

Hi Owen,  yes Joe Lyndhurst's museum was an early example of a private military museum in the UK I believe starting back in the 1960's, I only ever visited once in the 1990's when it was on it's wane as Joe became older.

Joe's son was Nicholas Lyndhurst famous for playing Rodney ( Dave ) in the comedy television series ' Only Fools & Horses ', seen here on the left in this photograph.

Ste Mere Eglise . . . . . . .

Hi Johan, Kat & Mikie, thanks for your comments on the 1960's photo of Ste Mere Eglise,  I like how some twenty years after the war it emphasises how small the town was during the war.

Rodney also had a nice piece of military clothing on
Here’s a French 47-53 lizard camouflage smock with in turn became the famous tiger stripe pattern

Owen brings up a question I've had for a long while.  I used to watch and enjoy Last of the Summer Wine when it was shown here many years ago.  One of the characters wore what I've wondered is an actual military jacket or a civilian military style jacket.  I just don't have the eye for detail you folks have to pick things up from a photo. Here is a pic...

It’s a 1960 pattern British combat smock and it was in service for roughly 8 years before the DpM 68 came into service

Todays wartime gift . . . . . .

I was gifted this WWII German fuel barrel today that had been made into a BBQ fire, although not marked Wehrmacht it is pre-war dated with 1937 on the bottom end.  It requires a good wire brushing and then I will probably spray it with matt black heat resistant paint.

In 1979 the Boomtown Rats sang ' I don't like Mondays ', and some people don't like the number 13, combine that today date is Monday 13th.

However today I love Mondays and even the fact it's the 13th, the reason,  someone saying to me ' you have a Jeep, would you like this '

and the reply was ' yes I would Merci ',  front seam, stainless edge, fixed bail, Normandy find . . . . . . . . . what's not to like.

Wanting to know more about these barrels, I did a google search.  Not much to do with German fuel barrels, but these clips came up as part of my search.  I could go on, but you get the picture.
