Another kind of War Horse..........this is one of the more bizarre war time pictures from my hometown Venlo. As I understand it the owner of a saddle makers shop acquired this horse around 1919 in Berlin and from then on it took pride an place in his shopwindow. As demand for saddles dwindled it got relegated into the background only to resurface again amongst the rubble ………..

Despite all the damage to the rest of the building, that wall looks stable.

Normandy Then & Now . . . . . . . Isigny sur Mer

I was out with visiting friends yesterday and we dropped into Isigny sur Mer on the way back from Omaha beach, I spotted the wartime shot of the town church in a store window and made a comparison shot.

.

Hi Erick, many thanks, hopefully I will be adding more shots this week.

Heres a shot that my friend Nigel hay shot while passing through Vire town centre, it's a wooden frame built in the shape of an WWII amphibious Jeep covered in flowers . . . . . . . .

Ken

Whats that bolted to the side of the church ?

German coms ?

owen

.

Hi Owen, there could possibly be German phone lines included but its mainly the town telephone wires attached to buildings to avoid using telegraph posts in the narrow streets. If you look further down the street there are more of them attached to other buildings. Notice on the right the Kodak sign on the front of the building.

Normandy find . . . . . . . . . . .

spotted this aeroplane engine in a field near Omaha beach, it appears to have been recovered from the sea looking at the corrosion and barnacles attached to it. Notice its a three bladed propeller and the blades appear to have been wooden looking at the remaining pieces left in the fixtures..

Red Spade is tactical marking for a 9th AAF Engineer Unit, confirmed by the insignia of the 9th Engineer Command Unit next to it.

The three bar POM code 51196 remains unidentified

Great crate!

See you in a few days!

Normandy Then & Now . . . . . . . . . Carentan

Hi Mikie and others that sadly cannot be here, comparison shots of a road in Carentan.

Notice the prominent light coloured stone to the right of the parking sign in my colour shot which is also evident in the wartime shot

Never mind who they are......look at that beautiful (and sadly obscured) Jaguar MK II :D

Have to admit the MKII is what I was looking at too.

Hi Ken,

I often wonder if people are aware from comparisons like that, that 70+ years ago a person's life ended on what is now their sidewalk, backyard, or street. It really brings home the human cost of WWII to see reminders like that.

Regards,

RC [and best wishes for the D-Day week]
