Sad news being passed around.

It is being reported that a French Jeep driver in his 50's was killed on the 6th of June when a Police car exited from a road on the right near Bayeux and crashed into the Jeep using the old law of ' Priorite a Droite '  ( priority to the right ).

If a newspaper report of it appears then I will post further details here.

Amphibious vehicles about this week.

Numerous amphibious DUKW's and amphibious Jeeps were to be seen this week either out on the road or swimming in the sea or rivers etc. here are a few that were about,

Photos #1,2, operational DUKW's

Photo #3 is a DUKW undergoing restoration that wasn't finished in time for this week, minus all the top decking and dash area.

Photo #4 is a WWII Ford amphibious Jeep

Photo's #5,6,7 are of a Russian copy of the amphibious Jeep, somewhat larger in size both bodily and tyre sizes

being a member of the bourgeoisie and being unable to afford Renoir, Monet, Degas, Picasso or Pissarro then I content myself with my art display . . . . . of Jeep, Dodge and GMC. !!!!, the artwork may differ but rich or poor coffee is coffee.

It is a proper pre-war made TA though, with the doors in the side of the hood where the post-war made examples have louvres. Looks like a nice, original example!

Hi VNamVET,

thanks for adding a piece of Picasso art, funny only last week I was exchanging memories of our childhoods with an old school chum and we were talking about bicycle parts we bought for pennies from the breakers yards and built our own bicycles, and ' Cow-Horn ' handlebars featured heavily amongst our creations.

I heard through our o.d. grapevine that one of our long-term military vehicle collectors has ended up in Bayeux hospital last Friday with a burst appendix, I had en email from him this morning and all went well with removing the appendix.

Thank you so much for your kind email. Yes, my Appendix burst on Friday and I am in hospital in Bayeux. The Specialist removed it on Saturday and I am awaiting the results today of the peritonitis which she removed which was caused by the infected Appendix. The hospital team are great - all French and from what I can tell, very well trained and all are careful, pleasant, cheerful and conscientious. All rather a nasty surprise!

Best regards,

Back in our 20's one of my scootering friends had the identical problem however the peritonitis was extreme requiring a pump working 24-7 to pump out the poison.   The upside of the two month hospital stay for him was a nurse had to leave the hospital each day cross the road to the pub and return with two pints of Guinness which he had to drink as part of his recovery, it has a high iron content.

Monday 10th June.

Well we were extremely lucky all last week I can't recall any rain at all, it was bright and sunny each day, however this morning of the 10th the heavens opened and the rain poured down, and thankfully so my garden, flowers and plants needed it, I suspect most visitors had already left over the weekend.

The rain stopped around mid-day and it's bright and sunny again this afternoon.

Dodge WC53 3/4 Ton Carryall.

I have shown photos before of the Dodge WC53 that I restored in the 1990's.  However I just found the photograph of when it was found and bought in Coutances,  France 1978, being used as a Renault garage breakdown truck, it had the overhead crane fitted with a GMC winch to operate the crane, and a Diesel engine had been fitted.   Fortunately I was able to find a crated Dodge engine and return it all back to original running gear during a nut and bolt restoration.  There were so many wartime Jeeps, Dodges, GMC's surviving in post-war France it was a treasure trove of U.S. military vehicles, sadly on one trip we found a rare four wheel steer Jeep and didn't buy it !!!!

I came close about 35 years ago. I started getting a strange stomach ache about 2am. It kept getting worse so I finally drove myself to the emergency room about 4am. The doctor at first suspected appendicitis but it didn’t hurt when he prodded it and I wasn’t showing any other symptoms. He took a blood sample and stuck me in a freezing room for a while. Test results were confusing so he decided to open me up and see what was going on. Turns out my appendix was just about to burst when the got me open. Another 5-10 minutes and I would have been in trouble. At least there was a cute young nurse assigned to take care of me.

A very pleasant conversation with a gentleman who's father survived a mine explosion under his Jeep. . . . . . .

While we were parked up Saturday 08th around the church at Ste Marie du Mont a well spoken English gentleman and possibly his mid twenties grandson approached the Jeep to look it over.   The older Gentleman said that his father was an officer during WWII and the Jeep he and his driver were travelling in ran over a mine which blew the Jeep up into the air, on landing and the dust settling the Jeep had been blown into two parts across the driver and passenger footwells, his father survived but the driver was killed. .

Once again I failed to ask more questions as to which regiment, which theatre which year etc, etc. the story incomplete and will never be completed for me.

My appendix ruptured several years ago, totally out of the blue, absolutely no symptoms until I started throwing up throughout the night which prompted a morning visit to the emergency room.  Arrived there about 7 a.m., and they could not arrange a surgeon until 5 p.m., that evening, and during the interim it ruptured.  All the next day, I couldn’t pee (sorry) so the young nurse (looked about 12) comes in and says I need a catheter immediately.  Ok, I was a paratrooper, combat vet, and I have decided there is nothing more frightening than getting a catheter while wide awake, the ultimate test of one’s manhood.  So, this young nurse brings in the catheter kit with a tube that looked like it’s about as big around as a jeep tail pipe.  Wide eyed, I told her, “…ma’am I’m very flattered that you think that’s going to fit where it has to go, but it ain’t.”  Now, she said and I quote, exactly as she said it, “…hang on boy, here it come.”  And by golly, it fit, I screamed, half from excruciating pain, and half from tremendous relief.  Moral to the story:   I have no idea how long I’m going to live, but I hope during that remaining time, I never have to repeat that experience!

Happy upcoming Father’s Day everyone, and thanks Lewis and everyone else who provided those wonderful photos from Normandy!

Rare model 4 x4 Chevrolet fire truck.

This Chevrolet fire truck appeared in Ste Marie du Mont Saturday 8th June, with almost all of it's original equipment on board.  It featured the early civilian dash gauge and had deco-style Chevrolet on the engine side-panels, with a front mounted pump of approximately 500 gallons a minute.

Last nights film . . . .

Last night I watched a wartime made film I had never seen before, part of the story was about training British aircrew at Falcon Field Arizona. Edward G. Robinson played an instructor at the airfield certainly he was wearing original style instructors wings, the shoulder patch appeared to be felt backed but I couldn't quite recognise it.
