That's where you are wrong about me, paraphrasing Jack Nicholson in the 2003 film ' somethings gotta give ' when he's accused of only liking one type of woman, he states ' there where you are wrong about me, I don't have a type '.  I have had several closed cab wartime vehicles, ok the windscreen didn't fold down, but they did open upwards . . . . . . . . . 😹

 

Yes I do like things topless and easy to get into . . . . . . and a fast exit when necessary.  👍🏼 !!!!!!!!

The Vehicle is a rare survivor, Restored wonderfully. As for being under powered, I refuse to drive my Jeep on the roads outside the neighborhood, People are inconsiderate and in a hurry everywhere here. They'll run over you and show you there number one. Road rage because they cant get around you on a two lane road. People today for the most part are inconsiderate. Then every one wants me to drive it across town for a parade or show. The new Jeeps will run off and leave you. So for that unless its on a trailer, off road or a residential road where 25 mph is the rule, I'm out. People are too much in a hurry to do anything anymore. Slow down and enjoy life. It will be over soon enough...

A friend said if you lived in London at 25mph you would be overtaking all the London traffic, it's so crowded it now averages 15 / 20 mph

Sadly too far gone for salvaging, regret the day several years ago when there was a brand new unissued sheet in the dumpster but buried under too much other metal to retrieve it, I was a dollar late and a day short as they say . . . . . . .

last week a local friend recovered these two discarded decontamination units from the land of his farm, and a photo of what they would have looked like when used.

A new appreciation...........

 

As of yesterday I'm (after almost 4 weeks hospital) home again. Unfortunately still not out of the woods but I'm hanging in there. 

Recently I've come to appreciate this remarkable thread in a sort of new way. When life deals you a couple of lemons  it's great to have a place where you can get your mind of off things. And this thread does exactly that.  It's the banter, eclectic mix of subjects, Ken and Johan turning us non Jeep owners into armchair Jeep mechanics, reports from England etc. But the most important aspect of this thread is this great bunch of contributers that make this thread what it is. Long may we run.........

Four weeks already, I suppose yours and our perception of the last four weeks are blisteringly different, I hope that you were without too much pain and looking on the bright side of being out of hospital again.  Certainly for me the weeks are shooting by VERY quickly towards D-Day week, a few short days of that and then we are heading towards the big anniversary next year. 

Emailing with a UK friend this week we both independently without knowing it made our first Jeeping visits to France in 1973, when we returned home we each saw an advert in a sales magazine under the Jeeps section for a grand get-together of wartime vehicles to visit Normandy in 1974 for the thirtieth anniversary, if I recall correctly approximately 100 WWII vehicles made the trip. It was shown on television news reports around the world  and the following year 1975 there were maybe 200 vehicles. 

 

Pleased that you kept in touch most of the time you were incapacitated, and welcome home again. Along with others you make this thread what it is . . . . . . . .

I made the same realization just a few years ago when we were going through a rough patch here at home.  NDL (and the forum at large) is wonderful therapy/ medicine.  Dr Ken may not have cured cancer, but he (and everyone who contributes) surely created a prescription that does wonders for the spirit.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of fellow French collector and author Henri-Paul Enjames. He is well known for this three major reference books on the WW2 US Army GI.

The two tomes of his GI ETO Collector guides have sold in thousands of copies, including the English language version.

Henri-Paul worked for years as a supermarket manager. But he soon tired of waking up too early each morning to restock frozen fish and foodstuffs in the shop and decided to pursue his lifelong collecting interest in a more productive way, that is writing a book.

Before selling his huge collection of WW2 US Army uniform and gear, he took thousands of photographs with one of first digital cameras on the market and then worked several years on this new project.

After publication of volume 1, with the advent of Ebay and the internet, he took advantage of his book rights money to start a new collection, which made up the material for volume 2. Then he started amassing groupings for his third book, ‘GI Stories.’

Henri-Paul remained a very quiet batchelor living on his parents’ farm, and shared his interest with a very tight circle of friends. He got his kicks out of the big Normandy anniversaries, and sometimes going to the bigger shows in Belgium.

He will be remembered as a very serious and dedicated author, always ready to share information with his fellow collectors, and to honor the American soldier.

 

 

I am sincerely sorry that I have only just read of the death of Henri-Paul, we met some years ago and he very kindly gave me signed copies of his books as a thank you for encouragement he said that he took from me.  I last saw him here in Ste Mere Eglise in Normandy he was a kind and humble soul, and I had thought that we might meet again somewhere in June this year.

I could not have said this better. You are exactly right about this thread.  And I had to smile at your comment about "armchair jeep mechanics".  This thread makes me feel like I can semi speak about this history of jeeps. 

 

However, the knowledge of everyone in here blows my mind daily. Ken posts a picture of two corroded pieces of metal along with a picture of what it looked like then Johan discusses the difference between early and late models.   Amazing!

So I finally got the third grille that I was looking for . . . . . 

 

We went to a militaria fair in Picauville this morning, actually arrived late at 09h00 and found out they had been selling since 07h00. !!!!!

 

I almost managed to grab an early slat-grille oil filter for earlymb but missed it by less than two minutes another person had seen it first and was pulling his money out to pay for it !!

 

So back to the grille I bought, I have owned Jeeps, Dodges and GMC's, I have already Jeep and Dodge grilles for wall decoration and needed a GMC grille. I have to remove the post war plaque showing ' Perkins Diesel ' and replace that with a GMC plaque I already have waiting for a grille.  I won't repaint it as it has some appearance of age the way it looks.

GPW lovers, a scrapyard GPW front bumper, not so great condition, nice deep  ' F ' stamped marking,  price well that was something else. 

 

I mentioned to friends that I was looking for a water pump fan-belt pulley, within minutes I spotted a cast example the embossed GPW could have been seen light years away without the Hubble telescope,  total over-kill, total fabrication, I passed on it.  Sad that some GPW buyer new to the game without past experience would burn their fingers buying this.  One of my friends asked the guy outright was it real or was it fake, he came straight back with' Fake ', but some unsuspecting new guy would like it.  !!!

thanks, I get engrossed meeting and talking to people and forget to take photos,  Hopefully I will make a better effort at the next one I attend this week.

 

Thought the dappled sunshine looked great on the Jeep which I left nearby under some trees.

Im the same when at shows/events. I get to involved in conversation and dont get any pictures. Use to be you had to carry a camera to keep track of now so much easier having one on the phone but I still get sidetracked.

weather in Normandy past few days . . . . . . . . 

 

Mainly it's been dry for the last week, not particularly hot but sunny and dry.

 

Saturday 27th. was a very sunny and hot day

Sunday 28th. sunny, dry no rain, good Jeeping day, outdoor militaria dealers very lucky dry weather for them.

Monday 29th. no sun, dark, overcast clouds, very windy, possibility of rain in the afternoon. 

 

Hope this helps you jeepers and campers heading for Normandy.

😩 I'm actually on the hunt for a correct oil filter housing, as I currently have the smaller CJ unit on it... Preferably a Purolator but Fram would be fine too, not too bothered about 'annoyed in' or 'annoyed out'.

 

A friend had a nice Purolator on the shelf, I'm going to see if I can convince him to part with it... 😉
