Hi Rene,  since it was you who mentioned the Romans, well looking again at the brickwork behind the Roman it looks like the building was built in the days of the Romans . . . .

You are right that it is an old building but not quite THAT old. It dates back to the 16th century (1588 I believe).

Interesting day today touring around the Periers sites . . . . . .

Today we had three Jeeps and a Dodge Weapons-Carrier and went looking around the outskirts of Periers.

We stopped at our first site commemorating the attack of the 90th US Division, at this site I photographed a board showing places close by, note the top left photo of the soldier negotiating a ladder to cross a small stream this is the river Se'ves, we went onwards to that sight which now has a footbridge across the spot. At this river site about three years ago friends found an unexploded mortar bomb near the river bank ( I posted shots of this on the forum at the time ) it was reported to the police and dealt with.

There is a monument at this river crossing unknown to but a few local historians and collectors, it was around this site that 210 members of the  90th surrendered to the German parachute regiment that they were fighting, after suffering a 100 dead, 500 wounded and the 210 who surrendered.

Two men refused to surrender and ran for the woods at the rear and sheltered in a farmhouse being watched by a sniper, one tried to run across the courtyard and the sniper wounded him, he sheltered behind a pile of manure but unfortunately he died during the night, his body wasn't found or recovered until the 1970's when a boot was initially discovered and a skeletal foot inside it.  The second soldier waited until

dark and escaped in the darkness, this soldier who survived revisited in 70's / 80's and was shown the farm that he had spoken of, inside he said that it couldn't have been the farm he hid in as there had been a door in the room he was in, the farmer moved a large cupboard aside and the door was there behind the cupboard.

Leaving this site today a mile or so away I spotted the remains of a GMC truck in a field, my local friends had never spotted this.

We moved on and saw several other sites, however the one below is interesting alongside this wooded lane the German dug a large defensive ditch to defend the side of Periers that the American attack would come from.  The ditch is to the right of the photo at various spots along the ditch it appears to have cut-outs into the embankment which would be where the machine guns would be sited.

As we stood looking out across the fields from this position a friends wife goaded me to find her a shell or bullet case,  the other vehicles moved off and I lingered a few minutes longer and then uncovered the remains of a vehicle / trailer or such, unfortunately seventy years too late to identify the piece.  I intend to revisit this wooded lane and ditch again for further investigation.

How good does your Jeep look in that lane in Autumn sunshine?

Should be used for the French tourism board.

And fascinating history to boot

Hi AG,  yes and thanks,   I thought it was a good composition, the Jeep on a forested dirt track under dappled sunlight.  !!!

Hi everyone,

another anecdote we were told came from a Frenchman that was around eight years of age before D-Day happened, his mother owned a cafe and one day when he came downstairs to go off to school two ' German ' soldiers were assaulting his mother and stole her purse and the money that was in it.  His mother decided that she didn't have to put up with this and went and made a complaint to the commanding officer, he agreed with her and next day he assembled all the soldiers in the town square.  She was asked to walk the lines and identify the two that had committed the assault, she pointed them out ( they were either Mongolians or Georgians, not German ) one of them still had the purse in his pocket, the purse and whatever money was missing was returned to her and the two soldiers were never seen again in Periers.

Hi Mikie,

Thank you,  it wasn't a posed or planned photo, I simply turned from the ditch to walk back to the Jeep and thought I would capture a shot of it on the track with the background of trees, It wasn't until I downloaded it to the computer for posting here that I then realised what a really nice shot it was . . . . . . . . quite pleased that it has interested several members.

Hi Kevin,

well those snowbound Jeeps conflict with the phrase the Spicer Company used on one of their wartime adverts ' The sun never sets on the mighty Jeep ' para-phrased from the British phrase ' The sun never sets on the British empire

Then & Now Coutances . . . . . . .

I passed through Coutances on Thursday and thought I would take a comparison photo, however the tree line spoils the central spans of the bridge. The metal bridge span in the forefront is no longer there.  May try and retake the shot in the winter when the trees are bare.

Normandy find last Sunday . . . . .

Last Sunday a fellow visitor to the cafe showed me some items of militaria he had recovered during the week from a farm clearance he made, there were two items of uniform both French, and what appears to be a German Bayonet, heavy post war use missing handles and curved sharpening on the blade edge, no real value other than a wartime relic.
