These are a firm favourite of mine, still being boxed and not chipped in anyway, made in New York in 1943 / 1944 period.

I'm going to "can" the can discussion for a moment.  My boss took the day off today and I am in charge of the entire office.  I am in complete and total command!  Everyone must obey my every order and whim to my satisfaction or there will be severe consequences.  POWER!!! IT IS ALL MINE!!!!  HA HA HA!!!

Too bad I am the only person who will be here today.  Bit of a bummer for my megalomania.

OK, let the can discussion resume....

Ha!  I have plenty of "ammunition" thanks to my dear little puppy grandson Gunji.  By the way, in the States today is National Dog Day.  Every day is Dog Day for me.  Here is Gungi partying hard this morning. A real party animal. Another one of him yesterday when I got home from work with a little more energy in him.  Wish all your 4-footed buddies a happy day today, give them an extra treat or two!

Those are great!  Were these were used as recognition training aids?  They seem too detailed for war-time toys.

Ken,

Youve got some very hard to find Comets.

Used to have a fairly large collection of them myself.

All i have now is this

Love the American crew in the German 1/2 track which was sold on the US market.

Hi Mikie,

Given the colourful cartons and any lack of military nomenclature I would say that they would be civilian sales, however as you say the detail would good enough for recognition models.   Here's the Willys Jeep compared to the size of a razor-blade.

Comets were initially made for the US government during WWII as recognition models.

After the war they were marketed as toys.

It was successful for a period of time and then sold to a company in Ireland.

That was short lived and was then sold to a South African company that had SAE on the bottom of the vehicles and figures.

They also made ship recognition models.

It's not WW2 vintage (it's a Matchbox from 1974) but I recently found one of the military toys I used to have when I was young. And let's be honest..........who wouldn't want to have a 'gold' Sherman tank. 😊

A few nice sets there,  I like the Women Land Army, and the coloured aircraft images above showing a Wellington and a Spitfire.

Hi Rene,

When I was young my weekly treat from my father was to visit the toy store and nose pressed up against the window choose which Matchbox car I wanted.  When I left home they were all still displayed at my parents house in a glass fronted book-case.  I made the mistake of never collecting them and keeping with me when I bought my own houses.  Sadly when finally my father passed away my sister law was the first to get to the house and she was just emptying the house of EVERYTHING with no regard as to what my brother, sister or myself would wish to keep.

She was a person with very little or NO sentiment and cantankerous to the nth degree . . . . . . .  ☹️

Hi Johan, lovely photo! Is there any evidence - real covers or photos of the headlight covers ever being produced and used? Just curious, as these and shovel covers have always been in doubt in my mind..? Thanks!

I have an identical set, no idea if they are original but they fit nicely. I probably picked them up at some show for cheap, so I always assumed they were home-made or so. No markings at all.

Probably the first (and last) time we had them on, Normandy 2004. Usually they are folded into the windscreen cover (which we use a bit more often) and strapped under the right seat.

Hi Johan.

here's my original covers they are that heavy American canvas with greasy / wax feel to them, I have always stored them in this glass jar to prevent mice or insect infestation.
