General Apathy Posted July 4, 2022 Share #21159 Posted July 4, 2022 . Last weekend of a traditional UK steam fair . . . . . . . A London friend visited a steam fair at the weekend where he lives, it's the end of this traditional family operated steam fair, time and expectations have moved on and it's an internet and digital age entertainment world now. Note the painted waltzer horse on the roof of the red van, also the ride dating back to around the first world war and biplane fighters, wish I could have got to see the fair for one last time. The Carters fairs were very popular entertainment around the first and second world wars. I recall this particular family fair would attend all the vehicle shows in the late 70's and 80's even organising vintage vehicle shows based around their fair events, back in the day never gave a thought that one day they wouldn't be operating any more. Also back in the late 70's they were still operating ex-WWII heavy vehicles for moving or powering their rides, Diamond T's, British Scammells etc. . Norman D. BryanJ Posted July 4, 2022 Share #21160 Posted July 4, 2022 Those are great photos that bring back a lot of pleasant memories from the 60’s and 70’s. We still have fairs that come around annually in Florida that are similar to the one’s in your photos, but they are dwindling in number, probably because they are expensive to maintain, and public interest is dwindling as well. For all life’s enhancements the digital age has provided, somehow those enhancements fell short in entertainment, music, and movies. Way short. General Apathy Posted July 4, 2022 Share #21161 Posted July 4, 2022 . A little enhancement to the John Carter Fairs . . . . . . . back in the 1970's John Carter was also a vintage vehicle owner as well as running the fairs. He ran a subscription magazine for fellow vehicle collectors and enthusiasts, if you were a member of the club you received a monthly magazine covering vehicle related subjects. One of my long term Jeep owning friends came around the corner of his barn one morning to see the postman astride his bicycle flicking through the pages of the magazine apparently when questioned he replied that he had thought ' Three on the floor ' was a different type of magazine and not a car magazine . . . . . . . . . . . lots of 1930's / 40's cars were only three gears forward and one reverse. We were all worried as heck. But he bounced back and is up to 20 pounds today. Daughter Kassidy bought him a small bathing tub yesterday and he enjoyed splashing around in it. Then he suddenly jumped out and immediately started digging in the dirt like crazy. We were laughing so hard at him making a mess of himself. Two minutes before this picture, he was nice and clean. He is a sweet little guy. Sorry, Ken, I’ll somehow restrain myself from abusing the tread about him.

My Great Uncle AJ was a chemistry professor. According to my Grandma, his sister, In the war part of his duties included being with or ahead of advancing troops testing and marking water sources as safe or not for drinking. I only saw him on rare occasions so never had the chance to ask him about this. He served in North Africa and Italy. Mikie
