Invasion Stripes are painted on Martin B-26 Marauders of the 553 Bomb Squadron / 386th Bombardment Group / 9th Air Force at RAF Great Dunmow in preparation for Operation Overlord - June 1944

Invasion stripes were alternating black and white bands painted on the wings & fuselages of Allied aircraft during the Normandy Campaign to reduce the chance that they would be attacked by friendly forces

Due to the secrecy, Bomber and Fighter units were not ordered to start painting the stripes until June 4, 1944, just two days before the Invasion

Best wishes wishes to Ken and everyone else celebrating the anniversary. Have a good time and the weather clears. Give us a report when you can.

God bless all those who served, fought and sacrificed to keep us free.

It's 01h00 4th June 2022 . . . . . . . . .

For the last two hours we have been swamped with Thunder, Lightening and RAIN, I feel sorry for anyone under canvas this evening, and for any militaria fairs on grass later today. A great pity that people save time and money to attend commemorations this week and the weather is being so foul.

It seems that rain has reached the area where I live. Time to break out the foul weather clothing.

Hi Ken, Wishing you well on this D-Day eve +78 years. Sadly I cannot be over this year; however my son is with his friends and 2 Jeeps! They are driving around with bustle racks to keep the extra canvases and rain gear in (looks like it will be needed again this year!!). They have attached adapted civilian tow boards to the rear for added safety.

Your bike LED system is brilliant. I have just ordered some for my Jeep, thank you.

For my bustle rack (which obscures the main Jeep tail lights as we know), I have ordered a NOS trailer plug and lead, with two rear lights and connectors. I will attach these with brackets onto the bustle rack giving me added rear lights. I shall forward photos when complete. I will also add the LED lights also for sure!

Safe driving, and my best wishes to you at this special time of year in Normandy! Cheers Graham

Hi Graham,

well this is a quick post I am off to bed the minute I finish typing this, it's 03h35 and it's been a 23 hour day today along with a  couple of Gin & Tonics as have most of the days this week.  I will have to file some reports after the weekend.

D-Day Wings museum near Carpiquet Airport, Caen.

Yesterday we visited the D-Day wings museum at Carpiquet airport near Caen, here is one of the items I discovered there a Shell-Mex & BP 200 ltr fuel barrel this barrel is dated 3-1939.  The Partnership started in 1932 and finished in 1976, never seen one before, expected it to be the usual German manufactured barrel with the two steel rings around the outside.

also a photo of the airfield hangers when it was finally captured after four days of fighting.
