sharing a warning I received today . . . . . . .

Called in to see someone today and left my iPhone on the dash of the car,  when I went back to the car this was the message on the screen.

Hopefully the sun has caused no long-term damage to the phone, the phone was very hot to the touch & it took ten minutes to cool down before I could use again ..

Hi Peter,

That's the one we were there to pick up, it's a genuine 1941 engine and body, there to have a broken valve spring replaced. . . . . .

Spoke to the owner of the Dodge Command car just had a major restoration and intends to start a touring business based in Caen, hadn't set the company up yet so he didn't have any business cards for me to share.

Two weeks ago I had to take off and replace an original Ford GPW Head I fitted in 1982, judging by the forty year longevity of this one I shall have to use my last remaining NOS Head around forty years from now . . . . . . . . . . mmmmh that's worrying unless I find another one to put in stock for use later. . . . . . . 🤣 The one I just took off has been sent to a specialist engineering firm to work on the areas of corrosion caused by the water in the block & Head, I donated it to a local friend in need of a Ford GPW head.

I think you can remove that rust relatively easy with electrolysis. I use that to clean rusty fuel tanks and jerrycans.

I remember a fair number of NOS GPW head became available about 12-15 years ago, but that source run dry long ago. A friend bought a few, packed the same as yours.

Hi earlymb,

yes you are correct electrolysis removes ' rust ' it does nothing for corrosion.  As I my old GPW head is at the engineering company I pulled this old Willys head out the garage, it doesn't really do justice to the corrosion on my old head but these shots might help show loss of defined edges, the water passage ways should be be clear / defined edges / shoulders, over the years the water erodes these edges and the free movement of the water becomes impeded and even passes either side of the head-gasket and then there is corrosion on the flat surfaces of the head and block and the gasket gives way and water enters parts of the engine we don't want.  In these shots it's possible to see the clear defined edges are eaten away and this disturbs the passage of the cooling water between the block and the head. normally if these edges are not too corroded it's possible to have the head skimmed slightly and come to fresh metal and a good edge, but both this Willys head and my Ford head are beyond that, so the engineer is going to rebuild the edges and put it back to the status of a factory finish head.

Terrible news . . . . . . .

apparently a Jeep was shunted from the rear by a Mercedes car travelling close to three times the speed the Jeep was travelling, the driver is reportedly dead and the passenger gravelly ill.

Even in daylight a couple of the red LED lamps that cyclists use are good clipped to the rear of the Jeep, they can be seen at some distance and especially so at night.  Original Jeep rear lights are no longer suitable at auto-route speeds.

True, electrolysis does not reform metal. Didn't know they can rebuild the lost metal, especially since it's cast iron :)

Terrible news! And not the first time this has happened! OD is still a camouflage colour and the other traffic just doesn't realize the difference in speed, even if they do spot you on time they might not immediately react. Even though I have a removable 6V rotating flashing light on a pole I can clamp to the jeep I avoid all highways if possible and use a car ambulance for longer travels. Even when I'm forced to use a highway for a bit (like for a bridge) I always keep an eye in the mirror...

Hi earlymb,   there are specialists out there for almost everything., one winter back in the 1980's my CJ5 cracked on the side-wall of the block along the line of the water jacket.  I looked around for someone to ' weld ' it,  I heard of a UK company that guaranteed their repair work not to leak, couldn't believe the process at first, NO welding a series of holes drilled either side of the crack and ' C ' shaped staples pressed into the holes pulling both sides together, fantastic never leaked anymore not even a dribble. the local engineer rebuilding the surface of the head can repair many things, he can also cut gears . . . . .

Recent news on the Jeeping accident, just received this  Hi Ken, Just found out sadly the passenger who was the driver's wife has passed away.  Helen x

p.s.  having tailed my friends kubel home on Friday I advised him to replace his rear tail-lights I told him how little they could be seen whilst following him.  there are some very similar style lamps that can now be bought with LED fitments . . . . . I sincerely hope he changes them.

Very sad news.

I used to have removable rear lights and indicators fitted to my Jeep. Meant I could drive to a show and then present the Jeep as it should be, Meant having couple of extra wires with bayonet connectors but it seemed to work.  I can't say I ever thought about what the results would be if in a crash but was always very concerned about driving it around with the screen down having seen what happens to a car when a stone or brick gets flipped up by passing traffic. In the end I restricted screen down driving to off road exploring.

Sad story indeed... I drove the Jeep the 350mls trip to Normandy on the motorway and other roads 4 times (1984-1989-1994-1999) and stopped doing that after seeing some terrible accidents along the way... In 2004 a Dutch collector driving a Dodge WC54 ambulance was killed when he was hit in the rear by a modern car pretty much like this Jeep was... The Dodge, although heavy, also flipped over... Not a nice sight....

For the last few weeks I have been busy setting up displays in the revamped War Building and I came across these ideal (and cheap) 'helmet stands'...
In fact they are kitchen paper towel roll holders from Ikea.... Not bad at 3.99 a piece....

We've been down in Pembrokeshire South Wales for a few days. On one of our beach walks I came across this information board. Beaches were being used in 1943 to test landing of vehicles direct from beached ships..... pictures not great quality. Not sure why 2nd photo turned 90 degrees.

Found this all about the operation

That is really sad and tragic  news. I actually survived a rear end collision several years ago in a jeep. It was a 1952 M38a1. Kid was driving way to fast and was not paying attention. I was a mile north of town taking the jeep out to a friends farm to work on it. Was stopped to turn left into he drive and decided to wait for the oncoming traffic to pass before I turned into the farm drive. There was a car trying to leave the drive as well. When I left town there wasn't a car behind me the whole time. As I sat waiting for the traffic to pass ( I was facing north the traffic traveling south) I looked in the mirror and could see a car approaching form the south. The spot in the mirror got bigger and bigger. I had my left arm out to signal the turn. The spot kept coming. I could tell the vehicle was not going to stop .I pulled my arm in and grabbed the wheel with both hands and started to crouch down waiting for impact. Hear brakes locking up and smell rubber burning. Next thing I know the rear right of the jeep is going down and spinning me around at the same time. Figured it was going to roll. When it came to a stop Im sitting right in the middle of the highway facing back south but up right just the rear end is on the ground and a tilt. Jeep still running. I'm still running. I unhooked my seat belt. For some reason I hooked it that day. The jeeps prior owner had put regular seat belts in it. I unbuckled and got out of the jeep as all I could think of was another vehicle or semi truck and trailer would  smuck me sitting in the middle of the road. I looked north to see the kid who hit me was sitting on the shoulder of the road ab out 300 yards way also facing back south. The impact had spun him around as his slid up the road after bouncing off the jeep. I saw the rear right tire on the road. Picked it up and threw it in the ditch so no one would run over it. People sitting int he drive said they would go back tot he house and call the Sherriff. No cells back them. They asked if I was ok. I said Pretty much. Had a gash on my left elbow from the door frame of the jeep. Looked up the road and the kid wasn't getting out of his car. I went back to the road and directed traffic around the side of the jeep til the deputy arrived. By this time other cars were stopping. Deputy showed up and asked if there was anything I needed or transport to the hospital. Said Im good. He went to check on the kid. He was ok but shook up. He finally came over and said I didnt see you. I "thought" you were turning..... I replied you thought wrong.

Looking at the jeep he hit me just behind the right rear wheel .He must have tried to dodge me at the very last moment and didn't hit me square in the rear. The impact has tore the rear right wheel off the hub right over the lug nuts and tore off the rear right leaf spring from the axle. The rear right panel was torn like a tuna can. This caused the jeep to drop and list to the right. As we stood there a couple other guys walked up and they were telling the sheriff They were behind the other kid (they were all friends heading to a graduation party) next town north. They said they saw it all and I could have turned. I said I could not navigate / turn into the drive safely with another vehicle trying to turn out and the traffic coming form the north. They kept flapping their mouths and finally the sheriff said it was my decision to turn or not to turn and I was stopped and signaling (the other car verified this) but I was stopped and the other driver was going way to fast and not paying attention. Hitting me from behind the other driver was at fault. But hey just like into days world its never thioer fault or they wont take responsibility. THis keeps the lawyers fat and happy. THe day was sunny and dry. Time was noon or shortly after. It wasn't dark or any other low light conditions. Even if I had blinkers or a rear light the sun would have not made them visible as the kid was not paying attention to his driving. He admitted he was "running late and in a hurry".

The is the moral of the story people are driving faster than they should and not aware of whats in front of them and not paying attention to the road. Especially now day when they are constantly on the phone or texting. No one was seriously hurt and it could have been much worse.

The episode you described with respect to Jeeps, is the same reason I’ve given up riding motorcycles.   Too many folks jabbering away on cell phones, made driving a motorcycle too frightening to enjoy.  The last straw for me was motorcycling back from the coast and coming upon an accident where three ladies, each riding three-wheel Harleys, we’re struck head-on, on a Sunday afternoon, by another lady driving a Cadillac while using her phone.

I love to take a walk around the neighborhood in the evenings. Over the past few years there have been 4 times where I was nearly hit by idiots driving while playing with their phones. 3 of the times were at the 4way stop at the end of my block. Big zebra crossing marks I was in the middle of. No matter, just zoom right through. 2 of them never even looked up while going through the intersection. Closest miss was by about a foot. The others were within a yard ( meter). My phone stays in my pocket and goes unanswered when I'm driving.

Warning just issued to UK visitors . . . . .

I jus sent txt warning to UK friends that will visiting Normandy in the next two weeks, the downpour of rain ten minutes ago was equal to my annual show-water use, bring rainwear . . . .  Yes American forum readers don't worry there is indoor plumbing in France and showers are available, well dependent on where you book when visiting including flushing toilets.

No one was seriously hurt and it could have been much worse.

.

Well it's at this juncture that I hold my hands up and admit that I rear ended and shunted a car twenty-five years ago,  I was driving the London North Circular in a freak downpour of rain, way up ahead theres a light signal controlled four-way intersection, the guy ahead of me stopped on a a GREEN light and proceeded to wave opposing traffic to turn into the side-road, I put the brake pedal to the floor and started aquaplaning on the surface water laying on the oil that had dripped from cars over the years.  Realising that I wasn't stopping anytime soon I slammed the wheel on full lock to try and hit the crash-barriers at the side of the pavement, better than the car I thought, , that thought went out the window ' if I had had it open and I hit the car with full force, the young guy got out almost in tears it was a company car and he had just had it back that morning from the repair shop from a previous rear shunt he had had. .  I asked him in no uncertain terms with total lack of sympathy or empathy ' what A-Hole ' stops at a GREEN Light and then directs other traffic to cross his path.  Anyway hands up it was me that shunted him so I gave him my company name and address and said that I would pay the repair bill without going through the insurance companies.   Next morning this raving lunatic of a transport manager comes on the phone swearing and accusing me of shunting one of their company vehicles that had just returned from a previous rear shunt so I gently questioned him on the proficiency of his staff driver as to how unlucky he was to manage two recent rear shunts.  He continued with the swearing and with my patience busted I elevated my tonal level and told him to go do one on himself and go through the insurance and retracted my offer of paying.

THanks Mikie

In the end the jeep was totaled. It sat at the friends acreage for almost 3 months. Insurance company was trying to figure a value. I had a lot of calls wanting to buy it and then would give them the insurance Companys number. I finaly told them if they didnt come get it there wouldn't be anything left as parts were starting to disappear. Finally they sent a truck to get it. Have no idea where it went from there.

Same here. Sill have an MC license but havent rode in about 5 years or so.Sold the Harley. Still have a WLA in the back garage. In 2002 I was hit by a car on the Harley. Driver turned in front of me. In a small town. He was heading home from work and I was passing through. He wanted to wash his car at the car wash and I saw him ruen the corner, drive half a blick and proceeded to trun in front of me. I had a 57 foot skid mark. When the world dtopped spinning he got out of the car and said he never saw me. I could see why he was wanting to wash the car as it was covered in limestone dust from sitting at his job site. He was a prfessional truck driver for one of the area freight companies. So much dust on the windows he couldnt see out the front or rear windows. The front he had dry wiped with his wipers. Emded up with two rods in the right leg. Was in a cast for 10 weeks. Still have issues with the leg. COuld have been worse. Then his insurance company took the issue to court and fought it. Said it was my faault as I was going to fast. He has admitted in public to 2 law enforcement officers and several emergency workers as well as myself he had not seen me. All he got out of it was a $35 fine for improper left hand turn. Not bad..$25 for almost killing someone. Took me 5 years to even get my medical cists paid for by his company and then I had to pay my own company back as well. As we say here its not if you will be hit its when. Dont get me started on the drivers with phones and not seeing motorcycles. TO many close calls and friends lost.
