It’s funny but on most films the same kind of thing is always photographed.
Here’s me at the bottom with the rest of the dummies awaiting to get dressed into a set during Squad.

A couple of weeks ago the film A Bridge Too Far was aired here on television which in itself is nothing spectacular but it was quite some time ago that I managed to sit through it entirely. I must admit that I still like it a lot. For a film from the seventies it still holds up well even though some of the German vehicles wouldn't look out of place in a Mad Max production.....

Here are some extras from that film.............

Hi Rene, there were a great deal of fabrications made for the Bridge too Far film, take a look at a lot of the Shermans they are just fabricated shells mounted on Landrovers, note that the tracks don't actually touch the ground, there is a gap and it's just possible here and there to see the Landrovers wheels behind that gap.

If you haven't seen the film "Theirs Is The Glory" from 1946, they used real vehicles, including a MkV Panther, and it was filmed on location.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiFeYxlPYy4

Ken and Johan,

In the military vehicles section on the forum, Jagjetta started a thread with a quiz on your knowledge of jeeps. I think the two of you need to take the quiz to see who knows jeeps better!

Hi Kat

Well I scored zero, I couldn't even find the quiz, it states ' take our quiz and test your Jeep knowledge ' but couldn't open anything up to see the quiz . . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the link It Is a great film and used many members of the airborne that had actually fought in the 1944 battle.

As Piet stated, That was filmed on location too, so much of the German wrecks were still there.

Here’s one of Kevin’s Mk 4s that we used in fury for the opening scene.
We gave it a fresh coat of more realistic paint for the job.
Speaking of tanks used in movies.

Normandy finds . . . . . . .

A few days ago a friend in the village dug a hole to set a new gate post into, he found this bottom half of a US meat-can as he dug the hole, sadly the handle was missing appeared to have been wrenched off before the meat-can was discarded.

Mikie that was a pure fluke that he found it while digging the post hole, a bit like the time I was digging in my garden several years ago to plant a bush and again pure fluke dug out a US parachute buckle in the first shovel full . . . . . . . another foot away in any direction and both of us may never have found the items  . . . . . . . .

Lots of local barn find things are still to be bought in local antique stores, two days ago a local friend bought a 1941 British ' Flimsy ' fuel can and a US wire reel, the wire reel is one of the best I have seen as it still has most of the original paint on it.

( the image of the Flimsy can is a file image and not the particular can that he bought

Rene, I always admired the attempt that was made to replicate the German vehicles for BTF.

At least they didn’t use grey US half-tracks.

My great aunt, who taught my father to draw, was part of the architectural team that made the plans when they rebuilt that whole part of Arnhem.

Peter, I agree that using US vehicles instead of German lookalikes would have been worse.

That rebuilt must have been a big job because there was so much destruction. Not only because of Market Garden but also from the period after. That modern rebuilt was one of the reasons the bridge scenes from A Bridge Too Far couldn't be filmed in Arnhem itself. They found a suitable spot in a place called Deventer. The link below shows an aerial comparison shot of the two places.  If you scroll down there's also a nice 3 min super 8 film.

These posters were on the wall at my Red Cross office.  I saw them while making a blood donation yesterday.  One is WW1 era and the other is WW2. Due to the floor plan I wasn't able to get close to take better pictures.  I'm pretty sure they are not originals.  Still nice to see them, though.
