And now for something completely different . . . . . . . .

As is our usual modus operandi around here I am moving on to something completely different . . . . . Back in May 2018 I auctioned off my  ' Buck Compton ' M42 jump suit that I acquired whilst working on the Band of Brothers series. As with all filmwork there is some amount of smoke and mirrors involved and in this case the jacket had shoulder pads fitted to give the character a more solid square shoulder appearance.   This was the only jacket that I recall as being fitted with shoulder pads, there were two sheets of prompt notes still contained within the pockets, one of the top pockets had a couple of coffee sachets and a burst milk powder sachet which had solidified from moisture.

Great Normandy pictures. Thanks for posting. Funny thing is that I can almost match them one for one with the ones I took during my first 5-day Normandy trip.

Since this was not your first trip I assume you've also seen the Maisy battery complex, if not, I can recommend it for you next trip 🙂DSC_3137a.jpg.cfea9a96feceeacc64c9e89365db936c.jpg

Ok then, I have a few more :)

The Tank Corps Memorial was erected in 1922 and consists f.of a granite obelisk with 4 bronze tanks of models used in WW 1. So this memorial was already here when the German army visited again in 1940 with slightly different tanks and advanced right over this same road (which as I stated earlier, dates back to Roman times) and as a result a bullet hole is still present in the model of the Whippet tank.

The photo's below show the view as seen from Wind Mill Memorial and it is clear why this was such a contended spot; you can see for miles around in any direction. Right behind the memorial is the small WW 1 Animal War Memorial. With all the carnage it's easy to forget countless animals suffered horribly and died in this foolish conflict...

Some random gravestones on Y Ravine Cemetery at the Newfoundland Memorial, mostly 2 burials per stone and over half of them unknown. The saddest inscription is the one on the 3rd photo though, and there were a number of them along the cemetery south wall. In these few square km's there are literally dozens of British cemeteries, dotted all over the place and sometimes only a few hundred meters apart. Then there are many thousands whose graves are unknown, they rest somewhere in the fields around.

Hmmm, and here I was under the impression that actors had to exercise before playing their part...........now they even get their clothers stuffed for them.

Just kiddin'. Great momento to have (or should I say have had), Ken.

Since it is doubtful I will ever get a chance to see any of these places in person, I appreciate the chance to see them through the eyes of you who post about your visits. Just another reason that NDL is the coolest place on the internet.

As is our usual modus operandi around here I am moving on to something completely different . . . . .  American Beach Racing comes to Normandy for the second year . . . . . . .

Looking forward to attending this with a bunch of car friends and Jeep Jockeys, hopefully it will go ahead and not be cancelled due to further virus regulations.

I added Ouistreham to the final flyer as there are a lot of beaches in Normandy as you will know . . . . . . . . . .  :o

And again, and now for something completely different . . . . . . . The Ripping Yarn of Tom Dobney.

A small story about a British child of 14 who signed up for pilot training with the RAF in WWII, he was sent to Canada and gained his wings. His real age of 15 was revealed when his father saw him being presented to King George VI after completing twenty bombing raids.

This is quite the weirdest and interesting of lives if you read the Wikipedia of him . . . . . .  Anthony Faramus

During WWII he was imprisoned by the Germans on the Island of Jersey, he was moved to another prison in Paris and finally to Buchenwald Concentration Camp.  Post war he became an actor and then played a POW in the 1955 war-film ' The Colditz story '.

Besides his age, surviving 20 sorties in a Whitley is no mean feat.................not the most cutting edge equipment at the time

Changing tack again......................I know most of us like the cartoons made by Bill Mauldin so when I came across a can of Shoe Dubbing recently I vaguely remembered this was mentioned in one of them. So here's the combo of cartoon and can.

140 photos of a 1950's Jeepers Cavalcade through the hills between Hemet & Borrego springs California.

Take special note of the photos because there are many pieces of WWII military clothing alongside the wartime and postwar civilian Jeeps, and also lots of period 50's clothing for us retro-clothing freaks . . . . . . . . .

The guy in dark clothing in the first photo has a pair of two buckle / twin buckle military on. Above the guy in the second shot wearing a sheepskin flying jacket is a person wearing another sheepskin., in the line waiting for food is a guy wearing a USAAF parka and service cap without insignia. many more pieces to be see in a lot of the other photos

Must be a different Mikie.  Although my darling daughter will be passing through that area in a couple of hours.  She is heading home from taking a few days off down in San Diego.  Harry and Megan must be slumming it moving into that area.  The house 2 doors down from me here in San Jose just sold for about $2 million.  Newer and bigger than my hovel, but  not a palace or even a mansion by any means. But that's home prices here in Silicon Valley.  Hey, maybe the Santa Barbara thing is just a cunning plan to distract the media. Maybe they'll be moving in here after all?
