Today's Then & Now, Normandy . . . . . . . . .

A Horsa glider crashed landed into a garden wall, it's amazing bad luck looking at the building behind the glider that he swooped over that building and dropped into the wall several yards away. Sadly the bodies of the pilot and co-pilot lay in the mangled wreck, note the water canteen standing on the grass in front of the glider.

This is the same building although post war modifications have been made to the roof area, all the chimneys have gone and larger windows added and closer together in the roof line.

Here's an example of a typical wartime sign-board where Maudlin would have got the inspiration for his cartoon. This location is a few miles from where I live, the house with the town-name painted roughly on it is still along with the painting still visible on the side wall.

That sign must be along the COM-Z rear area.

Not saluting in a vehicle in the field? We called that, "Sniper checking" when I was in the Army!

Vehicle crowded? Never saw that being a thing before. Back in the states, they were encouraging people to crowd into vehicles!

Hi Lee, it's on the main route down the Peninsula from Cherbourg towards Coutances and Le Mont St Michel.

Considering that a private was paid about $60 a month, those fines could be quite painful.

Two Then and Nows from Nijmegen. First up is a shot of the railway bridge seen from the southern bank of the waal river. The middle span of the bridge was destroyed by German frogmen. They carried charges in the form of two torpedoes 12ft long made buoyant by compressed air cylinders. The charges were fixed to a pillar and a time fuze would then be set.

Also in the Then shot are several DUKW's operated by British troops but also carrying US troops. The picture was taken around the end of september 1944.

Today the railway bridge is a single span affair. The angle of the Now shot is a little off but it's the same spot.

The second Then and Now was taken at virtually the same spot but now looking east (the photographer was standing with his back towards the railway bridge). Again a British operated DUKW carrying US troops can be seen. The bridge in the background is the Waal roadbridge .

Hi Rene, great shots and ones I have never seen before, fun seeing the British operated DUKW's and carrying American troops.

Hi Simon, thank you, don't recall seeing the one with the complete building in the background before. Sadly the second one doesn't have anything that is still there presently, so nothing to make a comparison with.
