RustyCanteen Posted March 18, 2016 Share #9051 Posted March 18, 2016 . Jeep, work in progress . . . . . . . . . . Apologies for being missing for several days I have been working on the Jeep all this week, hopefully I will be back on line tonight and answering the last few days comments. Shot of the Jeep in a friends garage, all the tools necessary and space to work around it, in front of my Jeep is a Jeep coming to completion from a full nut and bolt rebuild. That's my front seats stacked up in the rear of my Jeep, I had to take the tank out from under the drivers seat to clear the sludge that petrol becomes when standing for years. Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, March 18 2016. . Hi Ken, Fantastic progress on the GPW! If you still have it on the stands, you might want to think about replacing the spring bushings/bolts if you haven't already. Somewhere I still have a few I removed that stand as a testament to previous owners who forgot to add grease to them regularly. Regards RC

Are you fixing it up for a special reason? ....Kat

General Apathy Posted April 16, 2016 Share #9055 Posted April 16, 2016 No doubt Ken is still working on his GPW. RC Hi Everyone just dropping in to say that I am still here, Rusty is right that I am working on the Jeep as there is a deadline of this Monday 18th being the last day that I can work on it before the start of June, so if it ain't fixed on Monday it looks like I will be missing in parades and events at the start of June . . . . . . . . . . . . this year has kicked off real early, already in march family and friends were visiting or passing through the area, so torn between being hospitable and working on the Jeep then time has flown by, it's been a month here since I last posted. The reason Monday is a cut off time is due to further family visiting throughout May.. Two weeks back I met up with a couple of American friends and their families visiting the area, the wife of one of guys was working in the pentagon next to the spot that the airliner hit the building, fortunately she was away from her desk when the plane hit and survived. After the attack she recovered from the remains of her room a letter she had been composing to send to her son serving in Afghanistan. Apologies if I have left unanswered messages, I will try and catch up soon as I can . . . . . Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, April 16 2016. . You know, when you have family and friends stop by, you should offer them the opportunity to work on a real, authentic WWII jeep! Provide them with HBT coveralls, and let them have the realistic fun of busting their knuckles on frozen bolts and burning themselves when they touch a hot manifold. It is an experience they will never forget!

It is an experience they will never forget! Hahhaaaa most people like riding them, but not servicing them, and this is only a Jeep, trying finding friends if servicing a DUKW or a Tank . . . . . . . here's a shot of the old original brake shoes and cylinder after removal, and awaiting rebuild with new brake cylinder. a lot of the servicing is down to knowing the integrity of modern replacement parts, made in most part for cheapness rather than quality, especially parts like points or condenser . . . . . . . . hard to find decent US made parts now. General Apathy Posted April 16, 2016 Share #9059 Posted April 16, 2016 Hope you get it done. Looking forward to seeing pictures of it at spots around Normandy Hi Robert, here's a shot of how it looks at present taken two days ago, although it looks a little ' Normandy barn find ' I am happy with that look and only working on the mechanical issues. Total replacement of brake and master cylinders, also brake shoes pads, electrical parts such as points, condenser, rotor arm. and rebuild of the petrol pump and jets in the original Carter carburettor. General Apathy Posted April 16, 2016 Share #9060 Posted April 16, 2016 . For the Jeep . . . . . . . . . . Two weeks ago I managed to obtain locally this nice condition ' captured ' 1939 German ' jerry-can ', I have already attached it to the rear of the Jeep. Early in WWII the British captured examples of the German designed fuel can and then copied it, it was thereafter referred to as the ' Jerry-can ', the Americans however decided to go with their own design for a fuel can so I suppose we should refer to those ones as the ' Ameri-can ' ( American ) . . . . . . . Hi Johan, thanks for comment on the jeep, not quite sorted yet but hope Monday will do the trick. We have been living parallel lives, both have a Ford GPW, both using German cans on the rear, here's the one I used to use dated 1940, now gone for the earlier 39 dated and the earlier pressing in the side of the can. mikie Posted April 16, 2016 Share #9073 Posted April 16, 2016 True HAPPINESS is opening my email in the morning and find about 20 posting notices for this thread after one month of nothing here. Congrats on the jeep. It looks great to me. I actually like the look of the old stuff a little bit of barn-findishness rather than factory mint. General Apathy Posted April 17, 2016 Share #9075 Posted April 17, 2016 Ken, Thanks for the recommendations on the tour guids. I will check into them. My wife has already secured our accomidations and the only input I had was the location. I don't recall the name of the B&B off hand but thought it was beteween Utah beach and Ste. Mere -Eglise. How is the weather in April? Any recommendations on apparel .... Looking at your posts in April over the last few years, seems like it could vary quite a bit. Enjoyed the Martin tire video ... Amazing . Really like the 82nd felt patch! Thanks for sharing. Hi Skip, sorry for not getting back to you sooner, can't recall if you did in fact mention the dates that you were over here, so I hope you do enjoy the trip, hope you are enjoying the trip, did enjoy the trip . . . . . . . . . .. please post your thoughts and maybe a few photos of the area once you're home again, I'm sure the members would enjoy your recollections of the trip.
