Hi Ian, another great shot of Sian as usual, what more can I say, begrudgingly you take a fair shot as well.

Will you get to Normandy this year, if you're making plans then it might be good to see the 2nd Armored group when they will start here and follow the operation Cobra route, will find the dates for you.

Hi Ken, Very nice Christmas present! Hope your holidays went well.

Thanks for comment on the Gin bottle, very limited edition. Yes I had a great time at Christmas saw all the family, spent several great days out with my daughter and Robbie her boyfriend, ate and drank accordingly for the season.

^_^

Something for the shoebox find . . . . . . . . . . .

well as collectors we never know where we will find little gems, two days ago I nipped into a small store selling second-hand chinaware such as cups, saucers, plates and mugs, and spotted these few small items on the shelves, the owner said that she originally had a full carton of the typewriter inks. . . . . . . . . .

Go well with my field desk contents.

Ken,

You have just as good an eye at finding small items as you do at finding "then and now" shots! You sure have an eye for the detail.

Hi Ron, certainly won't use it on my salads, after seventy years though, wonder if it's still good to fry with

Canadian wings :D

Hi Ron, thanks for adding comment, I wanted to see what was raised by this pillow cover. There are Canadian wings similar to this style but for everything that I can glean through the internet all images show a five sided maple leaf at the base of the parachute cords.

It is well known that units of Canadian paratroops trained at Fort Benning during the early part of WWII, and I would have been quite happy to have a pillow cover produced at Benning for Canadian Paratroops, but it clearly states above the wings ' U.S. PARATROOPS '.

Quoting roughly from page 91 of Gerald M Devlin's 1979 book ' Paratrooper ' it states that Major Miley of the 501st Parachute Infantry first gave permission for qualified jumpers to wear their trousers tucked into the top of the jump boots. On page 92 it also states that the Army's board of heraldry wrote to Miley stating that any jump wings adopted could not in any form resemble army aviators wings.

Major Miley asked Lieutenant William P. Yarborough to draw suggestions for a suitable set of wings for the new airborne forces. I have seen referenced elsewhere that initial designs had been a parachute centred on a set of aviators wings. So maybe the question here has to be, were these wings an early attempt at U.S. Paratroopers qualification wings, and before they were disallowed by the heraldry board.

love to hear if anyone has some further thoughts on this pillow cover and the design of the wings as shown, any written or photographic evidence would be appreciated

Very nice pillow cover

Hi David, thanks, always thought it was a great cover myself but an enigma regarding the design. I showed quite a few other covers From my collection on a thread several years ago, there were Army, Navy, Marine and Aircorps ones.

Will have to try and find a link for it, and add here again.

Hello. Just thought I'd give you a progess report on my catching up on this fantastic forum. I'm up to post 3426, September 2011. I'm not sure what parts I like best, the here and now, the shoebox items, or the shots like those from the convoys and reenactments. I'll just have to say "All of the above"! It is a bit time-trippy since I sometimes forget that I am reading posts from several years ago. But what will I do when I actually do get caught up?

Could very well be an early unofficial design or artistic interpretation of the manufaturer.

Which ever it is you have a winner.

Hi mikie, good to hear from you again, quite funny to hear that you are persisting with the blog, you ask what do you do when you are caught up with recent posts, sadly maybe I could possibly spend many hours a day adding posts, but then that would prevent me from being out there and experiencing the very things that I show or write about.

Finally after eight years of working on the house, garden, socialising etc I have found the time to get into my garage storage and start work on my Jeep with a view to having back on the road this summer. The eight years of untouched storage has not been kind to it, the full nut and bolt rebuild I did back in 1985 has disappeared and it has the appearance of a seventy year old barn find.

This week I will be shipping it over to a friend who has full workshop facilities, the brakes need a complete overhaul as do a couple of other parts, yesterday after a couple of hours work cleaning the plugs and points I got the engine started, however there appears to be a fuel flow problem.

The rebuild as it appeared back in 1985, as Ford GPW it has a grey engine block

Hi Robert, thanks for the comment but ' exciting post ' might be a little over dramatic.

Very pleased to report as I mentioned in the prior post, finally got into the garage storage to check out my little green ' peep ' aka the Jeep, below is a shot of how it appears at present.

Hi Ron, thank you for your thoughts on my Fort Benning cover, I have always valued it but sad that it's origins are unknown, be fun to know of any others out there.
