siege1863 Posted April 1, 2012 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2012 I am trying to locate the T.O.E. for a field artillery battery, 155mm gun ("Long Tom"), tractor-drawn for 1944. I found a table (6-337/Sept 1944) for a battery, 155mm howitzer, tractor-drawn. However, I thought I read in Stanton's order of battle, the strength , particularly men, of the howitzer and the gun differed. Also, the table I found for the 155mm howitzer includes a fifth gun section. The unit I am researching (Battery B, 976th FA Bn) had only four gun sections. Is there another T.O.E. for the 155mm gun or was the one for the howitzer used? Thanks.
gunbunny Posted April 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2012 I think batteries typically had an ammo section charged with keeping the guns supplied. Maybe this accounts for the extra "gun" section.
45ACP Posted April 8, 2012 Share #3 Posted April 8, 2012 WWII howitzer betteries had only 4 guns post war have 6. Now 155mm gun and 8in howitzer batteries also only had four guns post war still only four guns. I believe the crews for the guns were slightly larger then the crews for the howitzers so there would be higher troop totals. Ammo supply was provided by the service battery. Have you tried Google? for the TO&E who knows you might hit some thing
