I have these two chevrons in my collection. They are both standard issue chevrons with a stiff leather backing sewn on. They both have safety pins for attaching to a uniform.

My question is when were they used, what for, and where?

Item one: 1951 to 1958 Technical Sergeant OD embroidered on blue twill

Item two: 1958 to ? Sergeant First Class Gold embroidery on AG twill.

As a guess, I would suggest for use by ACTING platoon sgts in training situations, easy-on, easy-off.

I my experience late-20th century as I recall), when rotating "leadership positions", for the day or week or whenever, there were colored (Inf blue in my orbit) steels and liners with "PS", "SL" "PL", etc. At school, there were MP armbands, with "MP" cut off and gold felt iron-on letters.

What about on early Flight Jackets in the 50s into the 60s. In Stantons uniforms of the Cold War we see photos in the late 60s, ONE Chevron sewn to the fronts of the Sage Green flying jackets, perhaps these were early ones ( we see both OD on Blue and the post 1958 Gold on AG )that were pinned on to the front of the jackets with the sewning the chevrons on the fronts not being autherized until 1966/67.
