kklinejr Posted December 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2007 Beckoning to the early days of "long range" aviation, I just dug this USS Akron ZRS-4 cover out of the piles of tucked away "stuff" that have been cluttering my office. The cover is signed by the only three survivors of the Akron tragedy that occurred on April 3, 1933. When the Akron went down in gale force winds off the Atlantic coast, only Lt. Commander Hebert V. Wiley, Boatswain's Mate Second Class Richard E. Deal, and Aviation Metalsmith Second Class Moody E. Ervin survived. 75 men died due to hypothermia or drowning.
