I bought this patch off ebay several years ago but I'm unsure if it's a genuine in-country made period piece,or a fake. It does have a good feel to it but I'm no expert on VN patches. I plan on offering it for sale but I'd welcome opinions on whether it's real before doing so.

Thanks,

Matt.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not surprised it's a fake/copy as it didn't cost me more than about $10.

Oh well we live and learn!

Matt...this is the kind of place which would likely be a source of such patches...assuming of course it is a repro?

You're up north aren't you? Do you frequent Soldier of Fortune in Corwen? Another potential source.

Thanks Ian. I have delt with SoF on a couple of occasions,an "interesting" experience!. The patch came from a seller in the U.S.but let's face it it could have come from anywhere!. I guess it might be of use to a reenactor? I'll probably put it on ebay as a suspected reproduction.

Cheers,

Matt.

Infortunately, "in country" VN patches are a minefield. It's a cottage industry in Vietnam even today! Member vintageproductions / Bob specialises in this kind of thing. If he sets eyes on it later (still early in California!) I'm sure he'll express an opinion.

I think you guys are thinking about Pittsenbaugher. Unfortunately a lot of his patches made it into Sutherland's SF book and since the repros were made a long time ago, also made their way into some good early collections. Don't worry, we got some too! Bob probably went through about twenty of our 1st Cavs because we got duped early on. But in their own right, there are so many of these fake 1st Cav ones, they are kind of neat to collect in their own right. Gil probably has a ton of them!

Thanks to all for your replies, glad I didn't pay $$ for it! I've alwas liked the look of it but felt it was probably repro, this is why I asked the question.

I don't think Moore Militaria would be the source of this one. I know there is a guy who makes custom "in country" patches for rein-actors and collectors. I can't think of the name off the top of my head.

You might be thinking of Jeff Bonemeyer who has been a member of this Forum. His work is much better than this.

As mentioned above, this looks to be the work of Mr. Pitsenbarger. I do have about two dozen similar patches I've picked up over the years.

Unfortunately they look close to the souvenir patches made in Korea in the 1970's, and a lot of people mistake them for such.

Picking this up about 10 years ago sounds right. The gentleman was quite active back then and made dozens of repros. He also made a series of 101st and 82nd patches with unique scrolls. He's fooled a lot of people.

Yeah, That would be it. Jeff does good work from what I've seen.
