Jack's Son Posted March 7, 2012 #1 Posted March 7, 2012 ......But I like these medal bars all the same. I was hoping to match his Yangtze Campaign, and Marine Expeditionary Medal numbers with his records....no such luck. What I did find was a mystery of sorts about the Yangtze Medal. Looking at the paperwork, it seems the records show that he was issued a Chins Service Medal W/1 bronze star, but no Yangtze medal. His service started in 1927, and the records show he was involved in the Haitian Campaign, but there is no mention of a Haitian medal being issued. The Medal bars come from his son, and with the appearance of age, and the like, I have no doubt that they are authentic. I'm just sorry that the story doesn't have a complete and happy ending!
History Man Posted March 7, 2012 #9 Posted March 7, 2012 Very nice medal group JS! :w00t: I like these older groups. Philip
manayunkman Posted March 7, 2012 #10 Posted March 7, 2012 JS, Super nice set all to one man. I wouldn't be disappointed if I were you those are some great medals and getting rarer and harder to find. In addition it is great to see some quality stuff with documentation. A rare treat to get some insight into your collection. With your discerning eye you must have some great stuff. M
BigJohn#3RD Posted March 7, 2012 #11 Posted March 7, 2012 JS, Very nice and well documented grouping, interesting mystery on the medal mix up  , but like you say very legit grouping wear and all  . Thanks for sharing. John
kyhistorian01 Posted March 7, 2012 #12 Posted March 7, 2012 I wouldn't worry to much about the mystery, the medal looks original to the group and it wouldn't be the first time that paperwork didn't match what he was actually entitled to. All it takes is a clerical error by the person maintaining the records in administration and it has happened more than once. He was probably issued the medal by his CO or Admin officer, but it wasn't entered correctly. Robert

Robert Agree, in seeing groups like this and speaking w/ others on the topic, missing documents and sloppy records on these medals is sadly more common than complete records for enlisted Marines prior to WW2...
vicjoy1945 Posted March 7, 2012 #15 Posted March 7, 2012    Beautiful USMC campaign grouping !! The CG, Yangtze and Expeditionary medals match in patina and would all appear to be issued to this marine at the same time. Did you get the entire jacket copied !?! I wouldn't be surprised if there is some additional paperwork that you didn't receive tht might shed some light on this. Sometimes there can be mulitple jackets for an individual, especially if they re-enlisted, and the staff failed to pull/find the other jacket ?! Its worth a try !! Vic
bobgee Posted March 7, 2012 #16 Posted March 7, 2012 Nice medal group, JS. I also would not be too concerned over the legitimacy of the group. Details, especially the transcript by NARA, can be erroneous. Review of qualifications for service awards will pin it down. There is more data to be obtained from enlistments from 1927 thru WWII. Good luck and enjoy the research adventure. BTW, I just obtained a similar USMC "mystery" group which I will post when I get his file. Semper Fi.....Bob
normaninvasion Posted March 7, 2012 #18 Posted March 7, 2012 JS, I agree with the above. Nara records did not reveal two medals issued to my gr. uncle, but they came in his collection directly.
Jack's Son Posted March 7, 2012 Author #19 Posted March 7, 2012 Thank you, M Perhaps when we have coffee next, it will be my turn to bring the groups ! I appreciate your kind comments.
