Please forgive me if this was taked about before, I was going to post in the hollywood helmets topic, but thought maybe I would start a different topic. So whats the origin of this helmet, Spanish ?

Could well be Patches, seeing as how the Spanish Army provided much of the hardware for the movie as it was filmed on location in Spain (who can forget those massed M47s adorned with black crosses?!) It's somewhat akin to the Euro-clone type which was used by US tankers in West Germany during the occupation years.

I was going to say what Ian did! Filmed in Spain and used their Tanks, gear, etc - same as the movie, 'Patton'.

Just the other day this subject came to mind while I was watching 'Kelly's Heroes' for the bazilionth time on the History Channel's 'An Officer and a Movie' and I thought about bringing it up to you guys then.......

After becoming so extremely familiar with WWII M1 helmets (to protect yourself from fakes on ebay) that you can see a problem with an incorrect HBT pattern in a thumbnail size photo -

Does it just about put your eyes out when you're watching a classic movie like Kelly's and the close-ups show their M1 helmets have the BIG OL' European clone rivets attaching the chin straps??? Seriously, things like that really do look so terrible to me now that it actually distracts from the movies! :crying:

I really did think it was SO OUTSTANDING when Steven Spielberg's shows first came out and he tried very hard to get things that looked correct. (Of course, it's impossible to get everything 'perfect' but he did a great job at most everything) - Many films done back in the 50's and 60's used incorrect contemporary items to depict WWII, and WWII gear was very plentiful for them back then.

Same type subject I've was wanted to bring up before - there are several WWII movies I have on DVD that I watch over and over that were made during the early war, or in the 50's and they use all correct WWII gear. I think of you guys every time I see them. (Maybe I'll list them in another thread sometime) - Anyway, ALL of their equipment is new and 100% correct, and that fact alone makes the movie more enjoyable to me. One of them that come to mind that everyone should have is 'Objective Burma' - They're riding in a C-47 for the first 15 minutes of the movie joking around and they're all fully decked out with proper, and new AB everything. Seeing a plane-load of D-bales makes me weak in my knees.

Harlan...I hate to tell you this, but the jump-suits in "Objective Burma" were actually theatrical costumes. One of them was the subject of much debate on the forum a few months ago. If you scroll down the uniform archives you might find it? I think Ken88 might have been the poster?

Yep, that suit is in my collection.

Do note that not all OB costumes were remakes though. I don't know why, apparently they used different types. In any case, according to the experts the m42s with pockets without bellows are remakes for the Objective Burma movie. Still kinda odd to have a WWII remake though :w00t:

Cheers

If this were a historical movie or real events, I would be concerned more about authenticity and it might even bother me. However, this film is for entainment and I just enjoy it for what it is and dont look to close as to what they are wearing. If you made it acurate you would have to get rid of Oddball.

Just my two cents :crying:

Have a closer look at the jeep at the beginning of "Objective Burma". Tell me what you see.

Interesting about the suit. I just thought it was some contemporary item because the movie was made early in the war. Still a great movie to me. I was a crew chief on the CAF C-47 for years and it's cool seeing them in action back then.

Another early one that's good is Guadalcanal Diaries. Bad thing was it's all about the marines and there isn't a helmet cover in the bunch.

Does anyone know what happened to Errol Flynn? Didn't he get caught as a spy or something, or was that just folk lore? He was a big star and disappeared from History. Maybe he got caught up in the McCarthy commie deals later (?) It just seems there was something like that, that happened to him. Those McCarthy witch hunts were really cruel and ruined some innocent people.

That's because at the time of the Guadalcanal landing the Marines hadn't issued the camouflage helmet cover.
