Here is a cropped picture of a recent find. The actual photo is framed, image size is about 11" x 14", and is mounted on a 14" x 17 "cardboard backing. The original is too large for my scanner. The life rings have the name USS Amphitrite and can be read on the original. The original has the caption "Photo by J. G. Waters 505 Fulton St Bklyn" in the lower left corner. There are no other markings or dates on the photo or frame.

This vessel has quite a story:

Laid down in 1874

Commissioned in 1895

Towed to San Juan, Puerto Rico to shell the city in May 1898

Sold in 1920 to serve as a floating hotel and restaurant

Scrapped in 1952

Details of her career can be found here - http://www.marinersmuseum.org/uss-monitor-.../uss-amphitrite

Enjoy,

Larry

The Meatcan

that's an unusual vessel for sure. Very cool photo! Didn't just about all the naval powers of that era go through a "monitor phase?" Cheap way to add some big guns to the coastal forces I guess.

Thanks for posting this

These beasts were propagated by the old school monitor officers. But they are cool....like a soggy pair of galoshes....

can you imagine how miserable these things must have been with any sort of weather? Water slopping across the decks and dripping down inside. That sucked enough on ships built for seas.
