SealTeam7 Posted February 20, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted February 20, 2012 What does S-1, S-2, S-3 on the size: Small the helmets mean?
cmaher55 Posted February 21, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 21, 2012 As I remember for US Kevlars it's XS, S, M, L, and XL. Regards "Many of the problems with the M-1 steel helmet had to do with the fact that it only came in one size. The Kevlar helmet is made in five sizes, including an XS (intended primarily for women) and an XL (rare, suitable only for men with a very large head). The unit weighs between 3.1 pounds (size XS) to 4.2 pounds (size XL)." http://olive-drab.com/od_soldiers_gear_kevlar_helmet.php
hawkdriver Posted February 21, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 21, 2012 When the kevlars first came out, to be sized for one, you needed blocks of wood, velcro, a large set of calipers, and marking pens. You would draw dots on the forhead, using the calipers, take measurements, and then with Euclidian Geometry, Calculus, Mythology, and some Astrology, would come up with a size, very cumbersome. Then about 10 minutes after the first attempts at doing this, a brilliant man by the name of Sarge came up with a expedited method that is still used today. "Here, try this on" Then when you said that it fit, he would look inside and say with great importance, "Looks like you are a L-2". I am only partially kidding, because Astrology during the day and in doors is impossible.

Sabrejet Posted February 21, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 21, 2012 The sizing has implications for camo covers too. No one-size-fits-all like with the good ol' Mitchell covers! For example, if you have a "M" helmet (as a collector) you'll need to find an appropriate sized cover for it.
Jeeper704 Posted February 21, 2012 Share #9 Posted February 21, 2012 I think the covers are for example "S to M" or "L to XL" or something. Need to check the one I have when I get home. Erwin
