Hi All,

I took some time to make scans of pages from my 1943 copy of "The Naval Officer's Guide" to post here and help out some members that may have some questions on basic USN stuff. The following scans are of ranks, rates, and authorized Navy ribbons as of 1943. If anyone has anything from a later edition like the '46 printing please feel free to scan and add it.

S/F,

Jeremiah

JEREMIAH: Here are some books I have turned into scanned CDs also showing navy insignia, have these for U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Public Health Service. I have made pictures of 1841 to 1945 navy rates, including USCG, USMC, and USPHS too! Sarge Booker of Tujunga, California

Note that the USN enlisted rating badges from the "1943 Officer's Guide" above, are pre-1941 examples.

As Steve has often pointed out to us, the badges from bygone eras may look similar to today's but there are a lot of underlying differences. The WW2 enlisted structure still had remnants of the "Old Navy, " of landsmen and seamen, watchstanders and idlers. Here are some pages on the USN World War II ratings and insignia, broken down by branch, that might help keep some of it straight.

JUSTIN: Greetings & Salutations! What is a surprise is that many of those out-of-print books and printed matter from 1917 to 1945 are still available and not always high priced, often far below what one might expect to invest. Saw the 1883 USN uniform regs which was 12 pages of text and 12 pages of plates, the seller asked for US$500 and it went unsold. Captain Joseph Tilley showed many of those plates in his book on Navy uniforms. Anyone who wants to have scans of those books pictured earlier can download them for no cost at https://picasaweb.google.com/booker1942 and put them on CD disks and even sell them to anyone or on eBay, I only want to see others have access while I breath and live. I am in my 70s now, a septugenarian, but use my free time to expand the website and hope others will go there and benefit and perhaps save their money and use it for their collection rather than their library. I am now in Florida after spending my earlier life in southern California for almost 40 years! Still have loads of books to scan that are long out of copyright. http://www.myopera.com and www.google.com have great IMAGES also that show lots of insignia, uniforms, etc., you name it, they got it. Best wishes for 2013, Sarge (Herbert Booker of Flagler County, Florida)
