patches Posted February 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2012 For those who may be interested, as per my links to places that have on DVD The DI and the 1970 TV movie Tribes, on the recent The DI topic, I have just ordered the Tribes DVD from this guys the company I linked on the earlier topic. http://santaflix.com/tribes.html I will keep you posted on my purchase in regards to this companies reliability, as this is not E-Bay, or Amazon, it might be a flake out company, also the quality of the DVD, as the only format I have seen Tribes avaible in is VHS, making the DVD version perhaps a cut rate number. GEB Posted February 3, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 3, 2012 I remember watching Tribes in my dorm room as a college freshman in 1970. I thought it was cool back then. I wonder how it has stood the test of time. I remember another interesting move from that time period "the Sergeant" with Rod Steiger. http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?res...FB4678383679EDE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSg93iamz8M

FNG Posted February 3, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2012 I remember Tribes as well. It looked like it had full USMC cooperation with its authenticity despite the awol hippie story. Does anyone know the backstory on it?
patches Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted February 3, 2012 I remember Tribes as well. It looked like it had full USMC cooperation with its authenticity despite the awol hippie story. Does anyone know the backstory on it? I think it was filmed at the San Diego Recruit Depot, have to see it again when I get delivery of DVD, perhaps old timers on the Forum who went through San Diego's Boot camp may be able to say for certain Provided of course if the have seen it, and remember the locales, at the very least they did use stock footage of marching formations on the Grinder, though LOL, they used weird M14 rifles, I have no idea why they just could'nt use real M14s, these M14 where the same types used in that movie with Brad Davis as Philip Caputo, in A Rumour of War, to me they seemed like the Italian Armys BM59, right ? but having said this, if the movie had to use these rifles that would indicate that they did NOT have the cooperation of the Department of the Navy, or at least SOME cooperation, but not full. patches Posted February 23, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted February 23, 2012 Finally got chance to watch the DVD, not exactly the greatest film, but it's good, it's period that's for sure. I, believe it not seen this when it was first broadcast on TV in November 1970, I watched it at one of my grandmothers apartments, I was 9 years old, I was thilled by it even naturally I really could understand it at that age, plus My cousin was only home for a few months after his being in the Marines for 4 years, to include being in Vietnam, so It has a certain nostalga for me. As far as the movie having support of the Marine Corps, it did have a Technical Advisor, one Captain Richard Haack USMC, since there is no RET after his name, I would say that Haack was on active duty, There is like I said before loads of Stock footage, and it would appear to filmed on some kind of military installation maybe at San Diego itself, The weapons are from what I can see mock up M14s , that they in fact are actualy M1 Rifles, they even jammed a M14 Mag in the the bottom, why not give out a few actual M14s I thought, or if it was as it believed taken place the year before in 1969, then a few M16s. below is an image I found that shows this Rifle, it is also the photo on the back of the DVD case.
