Wailuna Posted January 28, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2012 This Keystone B-3 bomber is somewhere on Mindanao, P.I., ca. 1935. The nose art is the insignia of 28th Bombardment Squadron, stationed at Nichols Field, near Manila. None of the men in the picture are identified but they appear to be an eclectic mix of American and Filipino soldiers with some local civilians. They are sporting an interesting variety of headgear as well, including one officer (?) in khakis who is wearing what was then called the "field cap" (bka: "overseas cap" in WWI). The overseas hat was never authorized and it was supposed simply to "go away" after the AEF and AGF came home. The field cap was authorized for Air Corps officers on flying duty ca. 1925 to overcome the impracticality of wearing campaign hats in an open cockpit (source: Emerson's Encyclopedia, ch. 74).
