Useful Tips & Reminder to All Users

Recommended Posts

Figured I would post this list of useful tips I received from cwnorma, who had used it another website where he was a moderator. I think it is a good reminder about posting and how to deal with others in the online world:

1. Think the message through carefully before you post it.

2. Choose your subject heading carefully. Ten times as many people will read your subject line as will read your message.

3. Accept that no matter what you say, someone can find a way to turn your own words against you.

4. Accept that other people have the right of free speech.

5. Do not repost the same argument you made in a previous post. Posting a point once is stronger than using two posts to make one point. As long as your original post still exists, anyone can read it and accept it as if it were a response to your critic.

6. Do not feel obligated to respond to any post. Of course, when someone asks if you meant "World War One" when you said "Civil War" and the answer is affirmative, a response is appropriate.

7. Let the other person have the last word in a disagreement. Making the final post in an argumentative thread is perceived as weakness, not a strength.

8. Assume that any comment overly critical of you will not be believed, and will soon be offset by a response from someone who thinks you are being treated unfairly.

9. Use humor, but use it sparingly. A little humor sharpens an argument, but too much humor comes across as meanness.

10. It is easy for one person to post multiple messages, attaching a different name to each. Therefore, multiple anonymous attacks might all be posted by just one person. The more outrageous the attacks, the more likely that they were all posted by one person.

11. If you are asking a question or requesting information, use a question mark in the subject line.

Hello,

I know this may sound stupid and know that there are many reasons for it. But when do you allow new users to post more than 3 times and is that 3 times per day or until something that has to be reset by admin daily?? Reason I ask is that I finally got signed up yesterday, used two posts and cannot post anything further. Don't know where the 3 post came from or maybe I just can't count. Most likely a weekend issue? Anyway just asking for future reference. Thank you. Jim

You have to wait 1 or 2 days before you can post as much as you want

There are "spammers" who will register on a forum and then immediately go on every thread to make posts, most often of gratuitous pornography. These spammers can create hundreds of offensive posts per hour, causing incredible headaches for the moderating staff.

Thus, this forum only allows three posts per day initially in order to avoid having that take place. Given the fact that we have thus far avoided such spam, this policy seems to work very well, though may be frustrating for people who want to become very active right off the bat. Your account should become fully active with unlimited posting shortly.

Thanks for your understanding!

Dave
