manayunkman Posted December 29, 2011 #1 Posted December 29, 2011 Here are some patches I got for 20.00. Anyone know what they are ? Time period ? Thanks M
VirtualMariner Posted December 29, 2011 #3 Posted December 29, 2011 Top Row: Left to Right 1) Training Squadron 28 2) can't make out much of the writing, but this seems to be something from the Med, representing an exercise, operation or cruise 3) a Hawkeye patch; seems to simply represent the aircraft, not any squadron or unit 4) I believe VR-24 is Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 24 Bottom Row: Left to Right 1) Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 24; same unit as #4 above 2) US 6th Fleet, which is responsible for the Med 3) another Hawkeye patch 4) USS Kitty Hawk, Navigation Department; these are the Quartermasters (in the Navy, quartermasters are navigation - not supply) Assuming these are the same general age and were procured the same person, I'd say there's a chance someone picked these up while deployed aboard the Kitty Hawk for a Med Cruise. Can you put a close up shot of that patch, top row, second from left? That may have a clue on there.

Navigation Department on the Kitty Hawk was Quartermasters and Signalmen (my first ship) who communicated the real way like men, flashing light, semaphore and flaghoist, not like a bunch of sisseys who sat in a climate controled space and typed away or poked shiney buttons Steve Hesson

Really? You skivvy wavers are one accessory away from this:
Jason G Posted December 30, 2011 #6 Posted December 30, 2011 Oh ouch. That shot went right into the Signal bridge! (LOL). I'd say for 20.00 you got a good deal. I'd expect to pay 5-7 dollars each for these, some a bit more.
VirtualMariner Posted December 30, 2011 #7 Posted December 30, 2011 I had a cousin on the Kitty Hawk, but not sure when. Early or mid 80's, maybe. I didn't realize the QMs and SMs were in the same department. On my old ship, we kept our Signalmen sequestered on the 08 level where the only people subjected to their bad influence were usually the lookouts. Alas, the Signalmen have gone the way of the dinosaur in today's Navy. Incidentally, in my climate controlled space, we rarely typed away and when we poked at shiney buttons, it was in an exceedingly masculine manner.
VirtualMariner Posted January 3, 2012 #9 Posted January 3, 2012 Thanks guys. Any time frame ?? Not sure. Can you give a close up shot of the one that says Marathon-Athens, or at least tell us what all it says? I have a feeling that one might be the clue to date these. Maybe not, but it's worth a shot.
sigsaye Posted January 3, 2012 #11 Posted January 3, 2012 Uhm...sissies? Really? You skivvy wavers are one accessory away from this:   OSs, "Sigs, Sigs, we made a turn, where's the carrier NOW?" Heard that lots. Any way, all joking aside, SMs went away in '04 (mostly just folded into the Quartermasters to strenthen the breed On Carriers, SMs were NAV dept. Every other ship they were OPS, most times in the same division as the RMs, on bigger gators, a seperate division. I always used to say that Signalmen were just Boatsains Mates with a Light Duty Chit and a scam going on. Well, in '04, we got caught. :pinch: And besides, it just aint right you guys beatin' up on an old Sailor like this. One who ain't even got a rate to call home any more :crying: , Just ain't right Steve Hesson (who as OPS LCPO loved all the OSs, RMs and EWs as they made such good compartment cleaners and mess cooks  )

67Rally Posted January 4, 2012 #13 Posted January 4, 2012 Not too many EW's as mess cooks as most got out of school as a petty ofiicers unlike the OS's RM's and oh yeah SM's! EWs cranked as E-4s on my CG and AOE. It was funny to see push-buttons get the rude awakening. Steve...let it be known that one of my best friends from my active duty days is a retired SMCM and a is still a dear friend. Our OS/SM rivalry is still in tact and very much in play.
NorBn Posted January 4, 2012 #14 Posted January 4, 2012 The Marathon-Athen patch looks like a civilian patch to me. It has “Internationaler Folkslauf” (German for something like International Peoples Run) written on it and what I first thought was the flags from the different NATO countries. When I looked closer I noticed the US flag is missing and there is also the flag of Sweden and the flag of Finland, so I don’t think it’s a NATO/ military patch. With the larger German and Greek flags and German writing my guess is a civilian sports patch of some kind, but I can’t figure out the rest of the writing and can be wrong.
