Why I hate Pawn Stars

Just saw the new episode of Paws Stars where a man (who's grandfather was in the 101st Airborne) brought in 26 original WWII YANK magazines to sell. Albeit all were from 1945 but one even had Lucille Ball as the featured pin-up girl and a few were all about VE day. And what was Rick's response? "Things like this just don't sell." So he passed on them and even remarked to the man that "you've been yanked" (ha ha). Are you kidding me?? -_-

Saw that also.I buy Yank mags and I bought about 60-70 of them at a show last summer for $40.Sometimes they are not in the best of shape. They have a lot of hidden information in them not often seen.In the back there is normally a little section on new items.I have the issue where it talks about the ike jacket and an issue telling of the M43 double buckle combat boots too. Also the issues with the Combat Medics badge and the Meritorious Unit Citation. Then the pin ups of the girls are a collectible in their own right as just about any GI had one pinned in a foot locker or on the wall at some time. Then the Issues with the paratrooper for Varsity and the Iwo issue.Yanks can be a great source of period pictures as well as the Life magazines.

To bad Ricky is not a bit more business savy.He had someone wanting to sell.Once the guy mentioned it was his fathers stuff he could have asked if there were other items(US or German)then tell him if anything is for sale I can make a better offer if there is something else for sale.

I think he could of handled it better but then he is such a know it all his ego over rides his ability to be courteous and see potential in front of him.To bad he got burned on the baseball card.I wouldnt have given a hundred for it.But Im sure little mistakes are absorbed by bigger ticket items.

How about the LeMat he bought??I thought 10k was a bit for its condition.

I’ve gone into many antique places over the years where I see the same stores over time. When they have old Yank magazines, they often hang around for a really long time. I have to agree with the show on this. For a pawn shop, I doubt there’s much a call for them. They were printed on poor quality paper. Much like a newspaper, were never intended for life beyond a few readings.

They have staged themselves in Vegas where people will pawn everything they own for gambling cash. What gets me is how Pawn stars, American pickers act like they are collecting everything, I need this in my collection crap. They drive to different states pulling up to these old collectors that have lots of nice things. They end the show with loading up a sign and a bike and shake hands and they are off smiling. You know they bought the whole lot for a small sum. The one show pickers picked up a Winchester flashlight which the guy didn't know had any value and he gave it to them to break the ice so to speak. I do not watch them anymore spending my time on better programs.

Yeah, I saw it. Thought the same thing. At least he didn't put the caps on like in one of the earlier shows and backwards to boot.

There was certainly nothing at all special in that lot.

This is why I don't like this show or these guys in general. They have absolutely no appreciation for these items. The seller mentioned that the aviator was a twenty year vet and still alive. The pickers didn't ask about his history, or if he had more items to add to the group. To them these are just random items they are interested in because the think military items are "cool" now. Whatever context and history these items had will be lost as the items will be sold as "fashion" items. Done with rant.

I really dislike that that Pawn stars show because it is obviously fake and scripted. The so-called "experts" are often off on their appraisals. I remember one expert called a Civil War Artillery sword a Cavalry saber.

Ron: Those guys weren't just 'salting' the show, they were actually stealing stuff from people. The 'salting' was just part of their whole thing. They were very, very, respected in the CW community until that whole episode. I do recall one being charged (maybe more) with theft/fraud etc.

They were despised in the Civil War community , the show does not vet who they take and they were in the right place at the right time to get on. In addition the show had a pretty good idea they were bad boys but kept them anyway. They were charged with fraud, theft from a museum , perjury and did a little time, One is back in prison for setting up a phony auction company.

Pickers is at least partly staged. They were buying some Civil War things for one show and the producers called a friend of mine who they planned to visit. What they were going to buy and what they would pay was all prearranged weeks ahead. At the last moment they cancelled and bought stuff from someone else.

There is a spinoff show in the works from Pawnstars starring their resident military "expert" (and I use the term loosely) which their team of experts will travel around and appraise things that will be auctioned off afterwards.

U.S. medal collector
Most of their high end items are rented and shown with fake owners. Most of the rare firearms are coming from the same person with different people bringing them in. Some of their local experts fly in from Calif and other places and are there only for the shoot. It's TV.

How many people wander into a pawn shop with a Colt Navel Gatling gun or a rotating Hotchkiss cannon only to be given some phoney offer?

I could tell that the show "Pawn Stars" was fake when one guy brought in some old campaign buttons for sale and they waited till the end to turn them over to show the word 'reproduction' on the. A real dealer would have done that off the bat to see and also know what to look for on those. It is "TV" for entertainment and that is about all, lol....

I always tell old collectors to help young collectors - because their widows will need buyers for their collection so they can retire to a condo in Palm Beach.

Gotta have somewhere to park all those Porsches up ;)

... Those guys must have never heard of metal fatigue.

It's a sure bet nobody will ever see what happens as a result of that defect, either.

The show's name is obviously a play on words, i.e., similar to "porn stars", pornography apparently being an accepted facet of American "culture" these days. That, coupled with the "cost of everything, value of nothing" nature of the show, makes me want to puke.

History Man

Did anybody see the recent American Pickers show where they were buying old toys? The were resting them on a vey nice Vietnam era pilot helmet. I guess they didnt notice it.

Was at the local flea market and more than ever I am hearing people talk about how they get items from storage units. A lot more people are looking for military items as well and it is getting harder to find good items. Some items slip through the cracks but its getting tougher. I run an ad on CL and rarely get responses but usually when I do it is when someone has something modern that they think is from WW2

Just my two cents.

Pawn Stars, the only reason I had been watching that show was because sometimes--you can actually learn a little-but mostly--they rip people off. One case in point of why I lost any kind of respect I had for learning anything on that show--was when they called in one of their militaria ""experts"" who was a person who has been banned or laughed off-of several Militaria Forums such as the "Lord-of-the-dies-forum (WAF) and others. Anyway, I don't know what the rules are here by listing actual names? but--ill just say the inits of the Pawn Stars Mil "Expert" starts and ends with: C.G.

Im certainly not an expert on anything except what I own.

House of Stuart
Just watched some guy walk into the shop with a complete Nam era ejection seat from a Phantom. An "expert" appraised it at 3500. "Rick the male member" offered him a 150 bucks for it. Because he wouldnt be able to get rid of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He could of sold that thing in 30 days or less, with a few well placed phone calls. Fortunately the kid didnt take him up on his generous offer.

I too question why anyone would do business with a pawnshop. You know going in that they are going to bend you over whether you are selling or pawning your item. I mean, I 'm not against a guy making a profit but many of these offers they make are absolutely rediculous!

Been watching the series for quite some time now.

I just ignore the stupidity and rip-off "procedures" of those guys and their so-called "experts" and just look at the cool stuff people sometimes bring into that shop. :)

Bottom line....... because they (sellers) are lazy. And I was going to try and avoid the stupid word so as not to insult any of our readers sensibilities, but I think it is unavoidable if you have watched more than one of these shows.

Seriously, how can you have an historical item signed by John Hancock, authenticated by Professor Rick and his "expert" and then sell it for an 1/8 of what they just told you it's worth. Especially after Professor Rick just gave you a complete Wiki historical account of the items importance to our history. Even an idiot can understand those numbers. LAZY and STUPID!

If the "experts" they have on the show were really "experts", they would be waiting outside and buying this stuff for half price after Professor Rick has insulted the intelligence of everyone involved.

If this show runs long enough, I would imagine that anyone with common sense would avoid pawn shops. Errrr....... Did I say common sense? Never mind.
