Okay. I need some of you old salts to lend me a hand with these rockers. Two of these, I'm just not sure what the command is/was. The other, I know what it is, but would like some background/clarification. So, here's my questions...

MSTSLANT: "Military Sea Transportation Service"; this was the result of DoD combining all sea transport under the command of the Navy and is the predecessor of the current Military Sealift Command. MSTS existed, as such, from 1949-1970. My question with this rocker is, who wore it? Would a sailor on a USNS ship wear this rocker, or would they wear a rocker with the name of the ship? Or would this rocker only be worn by someone actually stationed with teh commnad staff? Any thoughts?

NAIRU 741: I gather this is some sort of air command, but what? It is, or was, at NAS Jacksonville, if I'm correct, but I can't find any particulars. What type of unit was/is this and what exactly does the acronym stand for (Naval Air Unit???)

OPTESTSUPPU 2: I believe this command is still active and either is or was at Cape Canaveral. Other than that, I have no clue. "Test" seems somewhat self-explanatory, but "SUPPU" could be "support" or "supply" or...bascially, I don't know what this command is, but it's probably a bunch of people that are smarter than me if they're testing stuff at Cape Canaveral (especially since I can't even decipher their rocker).

NAIRU = Naval Air Intelligence Reserve Unit

OPTESTSUPPU 2 = Operational Test Support Unit 2 or (OSTU-2)

The MSTSLANT rocker would have been worn by either, those assigned to the shore componet, (have to have some sort of admin and logistical support) or those USN Sailors assigned to MSTS ships which for what ever reason did not have a rocker. I am most likely mistaken, but I don't recal ever seeing and "MSTS RUSTY GUTS" or what ever ship rockers. Just a guess, but I would think those assigned to the shore side of the house for sure.

Thanks! Any idea what sort of Operational Tests are being Supported by this unit?

Sometimes even after deciphering these things, I still can't figure out what they actually do. It's also amazing, because collecting these things serves as a reminder of the wide array of jobs and roles played by the Navy...and by extension, the entire armed forces.

MSTS Rusty Guts...that sounds like Seaman Schmuckatelli's old ship. :)

I don't recall ever seeing such a rocker either, but it does seem vaguely like I've seen something like USNS Neosho (for example) on a rocker. Were they called "USNS" during the MSTS years, or did that designation come after the change to Military Sealift Command?

I'm pretty sure the USNS designation came after the re organization. I remember seeing old life rings with MSTS Somethingorother on them. Ah yessssss, Seaman Schmuckatelli. Him and his buddy Murphey, always up for a "Good Time".
