VirtualMariner Posted December 11, 2011 #1 Posted December 11, 2011 Destroyer escorts were used during WWII to escort convoys of merchant ships, and were known by the DE hull classification DE. After the war, they were called ocean escorts, but retained the DE classification. This type of ship was essentially comparable to what was known in other NATO countries as a frigate. In 1975, the U.S. changed the name of this type of ship to frigate, also. While there are still frigates in the US Navy, there are no plans for future frigates, so not only is the DE an obsolete classification, the more general ship type is going away in the USN. I have only a few of these tabs, including two duplicates, but there were hundreds of DEs in WWII and the post-war era.
37thguy Posted December 11, 2011 #2 Posted December 11, 2011 Any chance you could find me one for the DE 746 USS Hemminger? My namesake.
VirtualMariner Posted December 11, 2011 Author #3 Posted December 11, 2011 Any chance you could find me one for the DE 746 USS Hemminger? My namesake. DE-746 is an odd surname, but I'll keep a lookout for one.
