VirtualMariner Posted December 11, 2011 #1 Posted December 11, 2011 An assortment of Navy bases/installations and various shore commands. Mostly Pacific side, some that are now shut down. There are some that I really don't know what they are, so any help with an ID or details would be appreciated. Here are the ones I have questions on: 1) For the NAVHOSP BRCL EVERETT, what does the BRCL mean? 2) FLEET TRAINING GROUP; this one is an oddball. Not sure where this is from, but I'm leaning toward Pearl Harbor or San Diego. The patch itself is very different from any of the others, wider and a different look and feel. Anyone have a guess? 3) Where is/was Submarine Base S. D.? Not South Dakota, I'm guessing?

As for the difference in size, style, etc, USN UIM's were made in many and various places - not necessarily by government contract suppliers, thus accounting for the differences. Patch Johnson

VirtualMariner Posted December 12, 2011 Author #4 Posted December 12, 2011 Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I understand about the wide variations in the make and manufacture of these patches. However, the Fleet Training Group is quite different from any of the other dozens I have. I figured the Sub Base was San Diego, but wasn't certain. I found references to Fleet Training Group being in San Diego, as well, but also references to Pearl Harbor. Wasn't sure if it'd moved at some point in the past, or if I was even on the right track with that one. "Branch Clinic"! Makes sense once you know the answer. I'm usually pretty decent at deciphering these things, but this one was eluding me. You read enough Navy message traffic and you learn to figure out the sometimes bizarre acronyms and abbreviations, but that has been more than a few years ago now, I suppose.
VirtualMariner Posted December 17, 2011 Author #5 Posted December 17, 2011 Not many, but some additions to my Navy base/shore command group. Pretty coole ones, though (at least to me). Naval Station Guam is still around, but the other two are a little more dated. Naval Magazine Lualualei is still active, but had the name changed to Naval Magazine Pearl Harbor back in 2000. NAS Cecil Field was decommissioned in 1999. Jacksonville, including both NAS Cecil Field and NAS Jacksonville (rocker pictured above), play heavily in my family's military history. Other than my dad being in the Army, we're mostly a Navy and Marine family. My cousin was a Navy airdale and spent most of his career bouncing around Jacksonville commands...from Mayport based carriers to squadrons at Cecil Field and NAS Jacksonville. My brother was a Marine airwinger and was an instructor at Navy/Marine "C" School at NAS Jacksonville.
