If the Italians re-engineered it, it would've looked great....but would've broken down every ten minutes!

A handful of P-38s fell into the hands of the Regia Aeronautica, which evaluated these aircraft for strengths and weaknesses compared to the Savoia-Marchetti SM.91 prototype escort fighter and used them combat. Colonel Tondi used a captured P-38 to shoot down a B-24 on August 11, 1943, and the heavy armament of P-38 flown by Tondi proved devastating to the B-24.

When Italy surrendered on September 8, 1943, the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force used the F-5A photo-reconnaissance version of the P-38 for reconnaissance missions.

Linedoggie

Lt Martin James Monti a USAAF P-39 pilot was transiting to the CBI when he wangled a lift to Foggia, Italy, stole a P-38(F-5E) and defected to the Italians with it. He became a Waffen-SS NCO and made radio broadcasts for the Nazis

Tried for theft and desertion in August 1945 his sentence was commuted and he reenlisted as an NCO in the USAAF. While out processing for discharge in 1948 he was arrested and charged with treason- He served in prison until 1960
