A handful of P-38s fell into the hands of the Regia Aeronautica, which evaluated these aircraft for strengths and weaknesses compared to the Savoia-Marchetti SM.91 prototype escort fighter and used them combat. Colonel Tondi used a captured P-38 to shoot down a B-24 on August 11, 1943, and the heavy armament of P-38 flown by Tondi proved devastating to the B-24. When Italy surrendered on September 8, 1943, the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force used the F-5A photo-reconnaissance version of the P-38 for reconnaissance missions.
