Steindaddie Posted November 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2011 Here's a couple more I've heard over the years: EF-111, the electronic warfare version of the F-111 Aardvark, was called the "SparkVark" F-16, with it's highly touted "fly by wire" system that had it's share of troubles in the early days, was dubbed "crash by wire" C-130 - "The four fans of freedom" C-130 - "Herkabago" As in Winnebago, the RV C-130 - "Herky Hilton" So called when we broke down in the middle of nowhere and had to spend the night in the plane. F-4 Phantom - "Bent wing bug sucker" F-4 Phantom "Pig" PBY Catalina - "Yoke boat" Due to it's massive control column. F7U Cutlass - "Ensign eliminator"
Bluehawk Posted November 20, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted November 20, 2011 Also: "Bookie Bird" and "Thunder Pig" for C-123 "Oddvark" for F-111 "Blue Canoe" for U-

Yep, they were called that, as well as quite a few other things. In the gun community we generically referred to most other helicopters as double-wides. Jim McCauley Posted December 26, 2011 Share #9 Posted December 26, 2011 Yard Dart -- UH-60 (back in the 80s they had several crashes resulting in nose-dives into the ground) I never heard "Yard Dart" for the 60. I always heard it "Lawn Dart". When I flew Cobras we used to call the Blackhawks "Crackhawks" because they let females fly them. Not so PC today!! We used to call the OH-58 A/C series "weed wackers". Also, I always understood "Hog" Hueys were the gunship versions. We also called Huey pilots SLUGS. Slow Learner Under Government Supervision. All in good fun of course! Since then I've flown most all of those airframes. Jim

Huey Hogs were before my time but I did briefly fly AH-1s between end of flight school and start of the AH-64 AQC. "Snake" was another nickname for the Cobras. We used to call our OH-58s Scooters but that might have been a squadron thing. I flew the other Hog (A-10) in my blue-suit days
