MWalsh Posted October 1, 2015 Share #52 Posted October 1, 2015 Thanks for tracking this Tom, and for posting it for all too. It's for sure an interesting topic. It's curious that so many Iowa troops or people who ended up Iowa, per your list, were recipients. In one of the Span Am medals attribution books it notes that a high number Minnesota men were late requesters and then recipients of some Span Am campaign medals, thought to be due to a very active group of Span Am veterans and their associations, and them spreading the word about the campaign medals and eligibility. Something like that anyway. That makes me wonder if perhaps Iowa had an exceptionally active and well informed statewide GAR network who really got the word out about the Purple Heart eligibility for Civil War veterans? I don' t know how else the disproportionate number of Iowans would be explained. I would lump the Albert Lea, Minnesota 7th Minnesota recipient in with the Iowans too, as Albert Lea is just a handful of miles north of the Iowa border. Likely that man could have been dialed in to the Iowa GAR due to simple proximity.
Championhilz Posted October 1, 2015 Share #53 Posted October 1, 2015 Seeing this topic again has inspired me to go back and search through the newspapers for more Civil War Purple Heart recipients. Fortunately, I have found some addition men to add to the list, and here is the first - John R. King, who was a Sergeant and later Lieutenant in the 6th Maryland Infantry (U.S.). I found the following article in the Evening Star (Washington, D.C.), May 30, 1933:
Championhilz Posted October 20, 2017 Share #54 Posted October 20, 2017 I wanted to bring this topic back up as I have done some more research using Newspapers.com, and found even more Civil War veterans who were awarded Purple Hearts: 1. William Patton Griffith of Brooklyn, New York, who served in the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry. An article about him is in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, July 2, 1932. 2. James C. Rouse of Los Angeles, California, unit not determined. Article about him in The Los Angeles Times, August 11, 1932. 3. Charles D. Brainerd of Burlington, Vermont, who served in Company B, 15th Vermont Infantry. Article from The Burlington Free Press, February 12, 1934. 4. Charles Netherwood of Oregon, Wisconsin, who served in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry. Article from The Oshkosh Northwestern, May 29, 1933. 5. Lewis B. Sergeant of Kalamazoo, Michigan, who served in Company H, 76th Illinois Infantry. Article from The Detroit Free Press, June 23, 1939. 6. James H. Buchanan of Morral, Ohio, unit not determined. Article about him in The Marion Star, November 21, 1932. 7. William F. Meadows of Castleton, Indiana, who served in Company B, 16th Indiana Infantry. Article from The Indianapolis News, August 9, 1940. 8. Albert Edward Gage of Chicago, Illinois, who served in Company L, 37th Illinois Infantry. Article from The Indianapolis News, August 9, 1940. 9. James Colmore Rogers of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, who served in Company D, 12th Ohio Cavalry. Article from the Eau Claire Leader, November 12, 1932. I have a few more, but I'm getting tired, and still need to post a few photos, so I will list the rest tomorrow. This first picture is of William F. Meadows and Albert E. Gage:
Adam R Posted October 21, 2017 Share #55 Posted October 21, 2017 Championhilz - Excellent research. Must have taken many hours of work to come up with that list. Here's the PH to Randlett which was mentioned earlier. Unfortunately I don't own the medal but I was allowed to photograph it a few years ago. wartimecollectables.com Posted October 22, 2017 Share #56 Posted October 22, 2017 Would these hearts have been officially engraved? Yes. Identical to the 1930's awards that went out to WWI vets.

wartimecollectables.com Posted July 18, 2022 Share #69 Posted July 18, 2022 Yes, until researched will look just like any 1930's and later officially named and issued Purple Heart. Regards the earlier question about Confederates receiving US Federal decorations. The ONLY US Federal award eligible for Confederate service is the 1938 Gettysburg Reunion Medal. There are of course medals to Civil War EX-Confederates who served in US forces after the Civil War.
