Thanks for tracking this Tom, and for posting it for all too. It's for sure an interesting topic.

 

It's curious that so many Iowa troops or people who ended up Iowa, per your list, were recipients.

 

In one of the Span Am medals attribution books it notes that a high number Minnesota men were late requesters and then recipients of some Span Am campaign medals, thought to be due to a very active group of Span Am veterans and their associations, and them spreading the word about the campaign medals and eligibility. Something like that anyway.

 

That makes me wonder if perhaps Iowa had an exceptionally active and well informed statewide GAR network who really got the word out about the Purple Heart eligibility for Civil War veterans?

 

I don' t know how else the disproportionate number of Iowans would be explained. I would lump the Albert Lea, Minnesota 7th Minnesota recipient in with the Iowans too, as Albert Lea is just a handful of miles north of the Iowa border. Likely that man could have been dialed in to the Iowa GAR due to simple proximity.

Seeing this topic again has inspired me to go back and search through the newspapers for more Civil War Purple Heart recipients. Fortunately, I have found some addition men to add to the list, and here is the first - John R. King, who was a Sergeant and later Lieutenant in the 6th Maryland Infantry (U.S.). Yes. Identical to the 1930's awards that went out to WWI vets.

This is Dennis M. Dailey's group. He was wounded in 1862 and 1864 but didn't get an OLC, for reasons unknown.

Yes, until researched will look just like any 1930's and later officially named and issued Purple Heart.
Regards the earlier question about Confederates receiving US Federal decorations.  The ONLY US Federal award eligible for Confederate service is the 1938 Gettysburg Reunion Medal.  There are of course medals to Civil War EX-Confederates who served in US forces after the Civil War.

Here is a snapshot of the whole grouping.  Hoyt went on to become a Minister and stayed in the Army Guard, eventually recaching the rank of Major.  He was mobilized for the Spanish American War but never deployed overseas.
