cpatrick Posted November 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2007 Per a request to post a couple of my CW regimental histories, I thought that I would post a few goodies that I had in the same box. Here is a hard to find Civil War Army/Navy Dictionary, dated 1864. The inside flyleaf states, "Sgt. Jacob Shaffer, Co. D, 61st Pennsylvania Volunteers - Bought in camp near Petersburg, Va. 1864". I particularly like the color plate illustrating national flags of various countries. Such manuals were available to aspiring NCO's and Junior Officers, usually purchased from camp sutlers. Based on the inscription, there is little doubt that this manual was purchased by Sgt. Shaffer during the Siege of Petersburg, under General Grant. cpatrick Posted December 2, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted December 2, 2007 Also, please keep in mind that I am always looking for certain Civil War, or pre-Civil War manuals, etc.
