2nd Lt. Jeryl D. Crowell

27th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron

7th Reconnaissance Group

KIA: 24 December 1944

F5-E (P-38), Glory of Helene

2nd Lt. Crowell was a pilot of a F5-E (P-38). 2nd Lt. Crowell was shot down and killed 24 December 1944, while photographing enemy troop movements during the "Battle of the Bulge".

On 22 January 1945, the 27th Photo. Recon. Squadron received a package from Maj. Gen. Lawton Collins VIII Corps Headquarters. It contained Lt. Jeryl D. Crowell's dog tags and an indentification plate from his F-5. When soldiers from Collins' command pushed south into the northern shoulder of the Bulge toward the Ourthe River they found the snow-covered wreckage just east of the village of Somme Leuze, Belgium.
