What books for beginning ww2 USN & USMC collectors?

Again, I don't want to get in a pis*ing contest.

 

If you have a problem with Jeff or his books, take it to him personally.

 

It is really easy to sit on the side lines and be a Keyboard Commando, and critque everything. But until you write something and have it published its just talk.

 

I used to feel the same way and wanted to slag off some writers, esp ones who have done Vietnam books. I then went on to publish articles for some Japanese collector magazines. You know what? It wasn't easy, it was a lot of work, and there is always someone out there who thinks they know more about a subject. All they do is nit pick at something very minor, and won't let it go.

 

As to your "Book" that would show wrong Vietnam items, do with it as you want. Here is where the difference would be between you and me. I would just make a mental note and move on. I wouldn't feel I would need to go on a public forum to prove how smart I am, by pointing out an authors mistakes. Jeff's books are the only ones available on this subject, and until someone else does another one and makes it better, this is what is available to the collectors market.

And that's the good thing about collectors getting actually getting to KNOW by experience their subject matter, rather than just going off of one book and having that singular book as their "standard" by which everything is measured. My last area of militaria collecting got all wrapped around the axle about the types and variations as per so-and-so's book. It got to the point where people concentrated more on what type/variation (and then sub variation, and sub variation of the sub variation) the medal was instead of seeing it as a nice medal. It frustrated me to no end.

 

That's why people shouldn't go and put all their weight in one single book or one single author. It's good to have a wide range of books so when something pops up that's out of the ordinary, you can reference multiple books and see if it makes sense rather than discounting it just because so-and-so didn't include it in his book.

You dont want to het in a pis*ing contest but the fact is : if I make a serious errors in for examle book about Vietnam War stuff and totaly missed items in each year like in J.W. book about Navy Aviation every one here will write about it and make a big eyes. I know that J.W. is Your and Owen good friend and you are a big group of collectors.

 

I know a lot of book with small errors but only a few small errors. Of course no one is Alfa and Omega and no one is perfect. Each book have a errors but it is nothing big, but in book about Naval Aviation most of things is not perfect and a lot of things are missed. Sorry this are FACTS and what I cant write about that becouse J.W. is a author or what? He is a God or something??? I cant write a bad words about it? I think here is more better and correct info about Naval Aviation than in his book.

Just personally, as I stated before, Grunt Gear and Equipping the Corps, both still available, would be my first 'gets'. I've seen, but have not the faintest clue on or about, the Navy uniform books. Beautifully done, but since I don't 'do' Navy, I don't own them.

 

I'd say in answer to one of the questions asked, about books being out of print, basically there are only so many collectors out there, and it costs money to continue to print books (no matter what they are). Unsold books mean money lost. I, personally, own Moran's book and think it's great, it was my only USMC reference book until Alec did his. I also own US Marine Corps Aviation Patches, another early and out of print one, highly rec'd if you can get it, called "USMC Aviation Unit Insignia" by Jeff Millstein.

 

I won't comment on Glenn's works as I've heard both good and bad about them. I own the first one, nice pics but it's not my 'primary' reference book for USMC.

This will be my last comments on these books, but I have to get this out. First off, I have them all. While I see the errors in the things that I know about, I still refer to them as they are the best source of clear photos of original items, and the period photos are outstanding. I still recommend them to others but with the caution at to the things that I know are incorrect and why it is incorrect.

 

When I first got the books, I contacted Jeff about his section on Recruit Petty Officer Rating Badges which, while filled with great photos was completely wrong as to the text. I was basically (politly) put in my place. Later when I first came to this forum, a discussion of these books as a referance for reenactors came up and I again attempted to point out some detail errors. Again, (politely) slapped down. I get it, He wrote the book, I didn't. He put the time, money and effort into researching stuff that is very difficult to research (Hay, we've all come across those Navy "Oddities" that Sailors just do and tho hell with regs). I didn't. I think my issue is that people DO use these books as the Bible. I have run inot reenactors who use the books as THE referance. And of course since some of Jeffs repro photos show something "Different", that is what they "ping on" and build impressions on ("It was in Jeff Warners Book"). Again, Jeff is not the only one.

 

I recently got a book on Civil War Navy uniforms. This one is really bad, (again, from Schiffer). ( I was in fact working on a book on the same subject since exsisting work on that subject was 40 years old and horribly in correct). The new book simply rearranged the wod works, tossed in the same onl photos and re-enforced all the incorrect mythology of that era. So, now, the water is much too muddy to put out another on the same subject (along with financially doomed from the start).

 

The differance is that there are still guys from the WW2 era around that know what was and what wasn't. I served on active duty with guys that "Faught against the Empire" from the back of Hell Diver Bombers to the bridge of Destroyers, or who chased U-Boats across the Atlantic. I have sat and drank coffee Daily with a guy who was a Cox'n on the Huston and spent three years as a guest of the Imperial Army building Rail Roads and bridges in Thiland, and lived with a couple of guys that grew up in that Navy. They have also looked at Jeffs books and asked the same "KFC", "Where'd they come up with that?" questions as I have. That is the issue. We here for the most part know what was wrong with the books. I now question the creditability of the sections I know nothing about (anything about aviation gear or the green side of the house). But those who know nothing of that period Navy look at thses books as THE SOURCE of solid good info. Again, it muddys the water.

 

And since there is really nothing to be done about it, I'm done.

I am reminded of one of my friends who has all of his gear from Vietnam. He bought a Vietnam jeep and desided to go to a Vietnam reenactment. He was over whelmed with people telling him that his impression was all wrong. Amd "they didn't do that in Vietnam." He was a Marine and one fellow walked up and said no real Marine would have hand sewn insignia and he needed to have all his insignia taken off and machine sewn. He said he never saw a sewing machine in Vietnam and the local women who sewed this on did so in 1967. He left early and never went back.

 

I wonder what book they all have as the bible.

 

All books have flaws. But at least it begins the trek of knowledge. Getting rigid and refusing to admit a mistake is when problems begin on both sides.

The Warner books are THE bench mark for the WW2 Navy subject.

Hmmm e-17 kit + Us navy aviator first aid kit was introduced in 45, also I never see photos of Navy pilots with fiberglass MKI knife sheath soo this impression is failed like hell. The same with Avenger crew: three person with MKI vest, Q.A.S. harrness + late war survival light and post war shark chaser? I think it is basic information in USN uniforms book which is also missed....

They even had their original WWII uniforms with it on the jumper. I’m sorry if this is something new to you or it’s too difficult for you to accept. It doesn’t change the facts about it.

 

Also, several photos show neckerchiefs rolled inside out. True, Sailors tied them with varrious styles of knots , but they were rolled correctly.

 

Also, in almost all reproduced photos of blues and whites (enlisted), they have been pressed incorrectly, with the trousers having fore and aft creases like civilian trousers and the jumpers pressed right side out (strangely, the collars were pressed correctly, had to be a bit difficult to get that).

Why is it so hard for people to get that?? Neckerchiefs were rolled & tied the wrong way, aiguillettes, rank, ribbons, and all types of insignia were worn incorrectly. Pointing these things out on original uniforms is not legitimate criticism, it’s just lame. It’s like criticizing a Battle of the Bugle recreation photo and saying “that guy has a beard and beards were specifically prohibited by army regulation XYZ so that photo is INCORRECT!!” Stop with the “it wasn’t worn that way” comments already.

 

 

In every repor photo of officers wearing swords, they are backwards (hand guard to the front, drag of scabbard to the rear). Sadley, these photos are on the same page as originals showing the swords correctly carried.

To piggy back on the dungaree note, there are a pair of dungaree trousers with "VF-111" stenciled on the back (commonly done) However, VF-111 did not come into being until after 1949.

There is a statement in the last volume which has a section about Signalmen where the author says that the red and yellow semaphore flags were used on ships and the blue and white flags were used on shore. Not only is this totally incorrect (it came straight from Wikipedia) but it was on the same page as an original photo of WW 2 Beach Master SM with the red and yellow sem flags (Retired Signalman here who was trained by WW 2 vet SMs) so I really picked up on that.

OK, those are details. On the whole, they are pretty good books. They have a ton of original photos that are not seen very often. The uniforms and equipment in the reproduced photos are for the most part original (the VF-111dungarees were still correct for the era). Just don't take the text as "Gosepel" and don't press uniforms like the repro photos in the books.

 

And, as has been mentione, they are about all there really is that has collected so many photos of original uniforms and stuff in one place. Start there and then dig deeper for the detail

Just opposite the title page is a Sailor who pressed his trousers incorrectly (front, instead of side seam).

Also interestingly, since the title would include uniforms worn from 1943-1946, the requirement for the sword to be maintained by naval officers was abolished on 15 October 1942. The frock coat ensamble was also abolished as per ALNAV 93-40, and thus was not a required uniform in 1943 (that would discard 19 pages of the book...)

Since there is extensive coverage of them, I’m bashed for including them with the suggestion they are redundant. As I see it, with that attitude, I’m wrong no matter what I do.

 

On page 125, there's a flat hat named to a H.H. EDMAN (his trousers are on page 168). It has the typical WW1 era checkered lining in it. Interestingly, Harold Henry Edman, service number 140-16-85, enlisted on 29 June 1918...and during WW2, he worked in the Armour and Co. Machine Shop in Chicago as a machinery repairman, since he was pushing 50 by the time WW2 ended. So, the hat's a nice one...but from WW1. Is there a chance that another HH Edman served in WW2? Sure, but I couldn't find another one with those initials alive during that period...

The guy’s name in it has nothing what so ever to do with anything at all. I can’t believe someone would research the name in the hat and call it an error in my book because that individual happened to be in his late 40’s during WWII. This is really grasping at straws.

I agree with Steve (as usual!) I got a copy of US Naval Uniforms and Insignia 1943-1946 a couple months ago, but only flipped through it when I first got it and then put it on the shelf. Interestingly, to agree with Steve's assessment... Just opposite the title page is a Sailor who pressed his trousers incorrectly (front, instead of side seam). I also agree the swords in the photos are worn incorrectly, and oddly, the aiguillette in the reproduction photos are also worn incorrectly (see page 36 as an example).

 

Also interestingly, since the title would include uniforms worn from 1943-1946, the requirement for the sword to be maintained by naval officers was abolished on 15 October 1942. The frock coat ensamble was also abolished as per ALNAV 93-40, and thus was not a required uniform in 1943 (that would discard 19 pages of the book...)

 

On page 125, there's a flat hat named to a H.H. EDMAN (his trousers are on page 168). It has the typical WW1 era checkered lining in it. Interestingly, Harold Henry Edman, service number 140-16-85, enlisted on 29 June 1918...and during WW2, he worked in the Armour and Co. Machine Shop in Chicago as a machinery repairman, since he was pushing 50 by the time WW2 ended. So, the hat's a nice one...but from WW1. Is there a chance that another HH Edman served in WW2? Sure, but I couldn't find another one with those initials alive during that period...

 

Anyway, I'm not picking on the book, as it's the only reference set out there. But, it just encourages folks to do their own digging as well to find out what the regs were (luckily the book has a copy of them on CDROM!)

They even had their original WWII uniforms with it on the jumper. I’m sorry if this is something new to you or it’s too difficult for you to accept. It doesn’t change the facts about it.

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Warner tackling a huge subject and assembling a lot of great information. That's the reason I said someone shouldn't rely on those books alone.

Wow, isn't that a little presumptuous of you? First, you don't know if there's enough interest in these books for a second printing? They have sold over 45,000 copies worldwide and counting. Second, I've made so many horrible mistakes that "we could help with some revisions"? Do you have any idea how condescending and offensive that comment is to me?

I know how much time and energy Jeff put into writing these books, and I think he should be commended. I have all the volumes in my reference library, and I use them all the time.

 

While reading some of the posts it reminds me when I was much younger and a new Vietnam reference book came out. I thought very highly of my knowledge and started mouthing off about it. I didn't realize the author was standing fairly close to me. He didn't lose his cool but just said to me," That it is easy to critize someone else's work, but until you write a book yourself and put yourself in someone else shows, you may want to keep your digs to yourself". He didn't get angry just made the comment and walked away. To this day I have never forgotten that.

 

We all know there is not a book that has been published that does not have a mistake or two in it, or someone has a difference of opinion. But I think anyone who dedicates any amount of time to sit down and write a book, let alone five, should be thanked for being so dedicated to this field of collecting.

Sorry for the late response. I don’t have the time to visit this forum very often.

 

I’ve always said from the day my first book went to print, I will personally buy back any of my books from anyone who is not happy with them. Contact me personally and I’ll pay you your original purchase price for any copies of my book, as long as they are in reasonably good condition. All you have to do is mail it to me. I’m not sure what Schiffer’s official return policy is, but I do believe they have a similar policy.

 

In my own defense, I'll offer anyone my congratulations if they find mistakes in my books. Yes, there are a few and I'm the first to admit that. Anytime anyone finds something in them that doesn't make sense or appears to be incorrect, I’m always happy to address it. If something is pointed out as a question and not a statement and it’s sincere rather than mean spirited I’m happy to hear it. There were a number of layout and editing errors that went to print in the Aviation book. A clarification and errata list is listed on Amazon at this link. I’ve been reassured by literally everyone who has a copy that these errors are trivial and do not detract from the book;

I am in no way offended or upset by criticism, as long as it's valid. For example, if someone said item X on page 123 is shown as a WWII item but wasn’t that item introduced in 1951? That is a legitimate question / criticism. If someone said, hey isn’t that the front of a 1989 Toyota Corolla in the background of your WWII recreation photo on page 456? Again, something like that would obviously be a glaring mistake.

 

On the other hand, when people make ridiculous negative comments or criticize photos without reading the accompanying text and branding their dislikes as “my mistakes”, I just have to ignore it since comments like that don’t even rate a response.

 

About the series of books in question, let's look at the statistics first;

 

There are total of 6 volumes. Each book has between 500 and 1,200 photos each. In all, there are over 5,000 original and contemporary photos featured in the books. That's over 5,000 written captions for the photos alone. In volumes 4 and 5, the entire text and illustrations from the 1941 US Navy Uniform Regulations is included with all amendments up through 1947 inclusive. Additionally, several wartime Navy uniform and equipment catalogs are reprinted as well as original Navy Aviation equipment catalogs of the period. No one has ever compiled and published any of this before. Additionally, volumes 4 and 5 include the regulations on a CD Rom DVD inside each book which made them two of the first true "multi-media" documents ever published for international sale and distribution in 2005. The books represent 37 years of research and took 6 years to write, compile and submit for publishing. As the author I was nominated for a Nobel Prize for non-fiction literature (for the entire 6 volume series as one body of work) and have received personal commendations, congratulations, praise and recognition from former US Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George Bush Sr. as well as former USMC Commandant Carl Mundy Jr. and US Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter. Additionally, I receive “fan” mail letters and e-mails almost weekly. My books are sold worldwide and are currently in the libraries of nearly every nautical and naval museum in the US and Europe.

 

I honestly feel that people need to first think about where books like this come from. They don’t just appear in print by magic. Regardless if you love or hate my own books, first try to imagine the logistics and reality of a literary project like this;

 

1. Put your own personal social life on hold for 6 years. No trips or vacations, no family events, no wife, no kids.

 

2. Scout and book locations for photo shoots including WWII aircraft museums, ships, submarines and Naval bases. Pay rental fees for 1940’s vintage cars, aircraft and ships (hint, my bill was close to $50,000.00).

 

3. Hire live models to wear the uniforms for the photo shoots who look the part of a WWII Marine or sailor.

 

4. Book lodgings and accommodations in Washington DC so you can spend 4 weeks at the National Archives doing research and pulling photos.

 

5. Seek out all the top collectors in the world and get their help with your research and their permission to photograph their stuff.

 

6. Lastly, assemble your body of work and put it and yourself on the world stage. Even if you are the very best at what you’ve done, there will always be people who will criticize and spit on you for it.

 

I can only speak from my own experience but writing books like this is a lot like serving in the military. I’m no Steven King so there’s no money in it for me. I’ll be lucky if I ever break even and that would take another 20 years to happen if I did. I put my own personal life on hold for years in favor of getting the job done. I saw that there was a lack of available information on the subject so I took on the job of providing that information. I was lucky to be published and now my books are my gift to the world, to anyone who is interested. Basically, I did all the work so you don’t have to. You have to be a very unselfish person to take on things like that. Still, I have no regrets. Before slinging mud on me and my work, man-up and take on the job yourself and do better.

As a general point of information. English is Jerry K.'s second language. He is from Poland. I see no need to attack his grammar or sentence structure, even if you disagree with what he has to say.

I would be thrilled if you could post, or tell us where to find, photos of WWII Naval Aviators wearing AN-H-15 flight helmets, B-5 life vests and/or summer flight gloves with black "USN" markings. If so, I would hasten to add these to my Naval Aviation collection.

Thank you for your considerable effort in producing these massive books and sharing your wealth of knowledge with us.

I noticed that you still dont believe in my facts. Soo let gets this thing clear up:

About SBD (Dauntless) I mean page 87. Two person there have items like: MKI knife in fiberglass sheath, E-17, MSA type C mask and guy at right have under his hand a US NAVY AVITATOR first aid kit. Your reconstrution repersent which year 1943, 1944, 1945 or maybe 2007???

 

FYI: E-17 kit yes it is WW2 but it was introduced in mid of 1944, you can read more about it here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...?showtopic=8605 and soon in the survival book by Dustin. I noticed E-17 kit at photos but were late war 1945 from USMC PBJ unit.

 

US NAVY AVIATOR kit introduced in jan. - feb 1945. This item was construced to replace first aid kit from M592 survival kit which was canceled after 44. I would like to see the photos from 43 and even from 44 with this kit, you can feel free to posted here. I noticed some photos with this kit but photos were LATE WAR 1945. It is hard to see this kit on late war photos becouse most Combat Unit werent equiped in the new survival stuff during the combat missions in 1945.

 

Fiberglasses scabbard were repliced in 43, you mean Army sheat not US NAVY MKI and MKII knife scabbard. It is very interesting. You can also can feel free to posted here any photos of US NAVY AVIATORS used MKI or MKII fiberglasses scabbard in 43 or 44 even 45 year. Naval News from 1944 wrote about it : "New type of sheath(fiberglasses) has been developed and is furnished with all current issues of sheath knifes" Soo I dont know how we can see USN MKI and MKII knife with fiberglasses scabbard in 43 or even 44.

 

You found Avenger Crew with only QAS harrness. Most of Avenger crew used : pilot - seat type parachute or Q.A.S. and Radioman and Gunner -Q.A.C. not Q.A.S. harrness. Q.A.C. harrness were more comfortable for Radioman and Gunners and Q.A.C. parachute pack could be fast attached to the harrness, faster than Q.A.S.. You can also feel free to post there Avenger Crew with only Q.A.S. harrness maybe you will find it but it would be un-typicall for sure. For you I posted photos of crews from 43, 44 and 45 with correct Q.A.S. harrness or seat type parachute for pilot and Q.A.C. for Radioman and Gunner.

First photo is from 1943, FYI the pilot in the center didnt have a Standard Facory made Q.A.S. harrness but conveted Q.A.S. harrness from Seat type parachute but I will talk about it soon!

It is not the end.

 

I missed: the 50 or so original photos showing flyers with QAS harnesses and Mark I life vests.

I dont know if you know or not but: Most of photos with MKI vest and Q.A.S. harrness are from 1943 but the main fact is that this harrness werent standard Q.A.S. but converted both AN6510 and US NAVY seat type parachutes to Q.A.S. Early modification didint have any extra "D" rings tacked to the chest straps. All straps from Q.A.S. pack were snaped into one "V" rings at the chest. Here are example from your book.
