Hi All

Just wondering about the smaller size T/3 . I have used SSGT as comparison. Are these just variations?I know the size could of shrunk due to washing on green on khaki ,but i have several more T3's that are the same size which looks slightly smaller and narrower than normal sized khaki chevrons.

Cheers

What you have in reguards to the OD on black wool Tech 3's are just two differant manufacture's, You'd be suprised how many diiferant variations there are in this OD embroidered on black wool, to give just two examples, with gauze on the backs and without gauze. In the main apart from the gauze backs there where four major differances that could be seen on this type 1. varying shades of OD thread, like light OD, dark OD, Browner OD, Greener OD etc 2. varying embroidered texture style to the cheverons and or rockers, the differances can be pronouced or very subtle, like ribbed, and or looser weave etc 3. size of chevrons and or rockers, some had broader chevrons and or rockers, this being from the top to the bottom of the chevron with some being embroidered flat and flush to the wool also make them broarder in apperance. 4. the overall size of the rank patch.

Just take a look at those two Tech 3 patches and you will see what I am talking about. Right off the bat, Two differant shades of OD, two differant sizes, two differant emboidery styles ( Subtle ), with the arm of the T on the right particularly differant. The same apply basically for those one's on the bottom, you see two differant shades on the OD chevrons, these types however didn't have one's with the gauze backings, at least I never seen one, these OD on khaki twill types could sometime be seen without a border, it edges being expansive with them folded under to the contours of the chevrons and or rockers and sewn. You are correct in assuming that one of the OD on khaki twill may have shrunk because of washings, the cotton khaki twill uniform was the one item that was washed in the regular manner, there of course was some shrinking as was normal but nothing like if a wool shirt and pair of wool trousers would have been washed in this manner

Thanks Patches , i realised there were many variations with OD ,khaki colors ,borders etc. and knowing the US textile manufacturing during WWII, there would of been a cottage industry churning out umpteen variations. Could the smaller squat T3 be for Women enlisted ranks? Just a thought. Really appreciate your detail replys-Phill

No, Wacs in WWII wore the same ranks the men wore. To my knowelge the manufactures of insignia during the war would be established makers of this type of insignia's with new one's being given goverment contracts as the war progressed, their would'nt be of the cottage industry type, those kind of people would be found I believe only overseas in places like Italy for instance or where you are from New Zealand. In the late 40s Wacs wore the same small 1948 regulation chevrons after this type was adopted, here it was the Gold on dark blue non combat chevrons,( which did'nt make the Gold on Dark blue ranks popular with men in combat support and support units ). In and around late 1951, early 1952 the Army switched back to the large WWII types, with the Wacs just contiuning to wear the small gold on dark blue, with a varient of gold on taupe for the female taupe uniform ( Im not sure when this Wac taupe uniform came out, early 50s ? ). The late 50s seen with the introduction of the gold on Army green insignia a small patch mirroring the mens large insignia being adopted for Wacs, they also continued to wear the small specialist ranks that came out in 1955 which was worn at that time by both men and women.
