Bob Hudson Posted October 26, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 26, 2011 This came out of the woodwork today: no info about where he served but his AMMF rating (basically flight engineer) makes me think he was on a PBY. This was in the box, but I have no idea what it is: I see them for sale online, but no explanation of what they are:
JBFloyd Posted October 26, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2011 The single medal is the Reserve Officers' Association Medal for Outstanding ROTC Students, in this case it's NROTC.

I wonder if he went on to become an officer?

Teamski Posted October 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted October 27, 2011 Why's that? He's got a good point. Unless the guy was anti-submarine, he wouldn't have received the Air Medal. He has no overseas campaign medals. -Ski

I had thought he was in perhaps PBY's because of his flight engineer rating, but I did another search just for Patrol Squadrons and found someone with his name in VP-50: I then found that VP-50 until 1953 was VP-892, the first US Naval Reserve PBM Squadron activated for the Korean war. This squadron shows up three times in the Navy's Patrol Squadron Korean War Deployments. Would this correspond to the three service stars on his Korean Service Medal? 1950-51 VP-892 Deployed To: Iwakuni AFB Curtiss (AV 4) thru 30 Dec 1950 Pine Island (AV 12), Dec 1950–mid-1951 Gardiners Bay (AVP 39), 18 Oct 1950–13 Apr 1951 Suisun (AVP 53), 11 Apr 1951–Late 1951 Date In: 13 Dec 1950 Date Out: 9 Jun 1951 Patrol Area: Yellow Sea, night patrols Aircraft: PBM-5 Losses: None Detachment Location: None 1952 VP-892 Deployed To: NS Sangley Point Salisbury Sound (AV 13) Date In: 1 Mar 1952 Date Out: 12 Sep 1952 Patrol Area: China Sea Aircraft: PBM-5S/S2 Losses: None Detachment Location: None 1953 VP-50 Deployed To: NS Sangley Point Date In: 1 May 1953 Date Out: 1 Sep 1953 Patrol Area: South China Sea Aircraft: PBM-5S2 Losses: PBM-5 on 30 Jun 1953 (non-combat) Detachment Location: NAF Iwakuni Kenneth Whiting (AV-14) Gardiners Bay (AVP 39) thru June 1953 Floyds Bay (AVP 40) Detachment Date In: 1 Jun 1953 Detachment Date Out: 27 Jul 1953 Patrol Area: Korean coast
KASTAUFFER Posted October 27, 2011 Share #10 Posted October 27, 2011 Why's that? Looks like you found him! I was basing my assumption on the fact he didnt have an EAME or an A-PAC medal and there were no stars on his American campaign. Kurt
