WWI 1st Division helmet

Recommended Posts

I acquired this today along with a German m16 steel pot. The US helmet has had some type of rough paint applied to it and the 1st Div. logo painted over that. The helmet is lacking its liner but it still has the chinstrap which the doughboy owner modified by slitting it where it would fit over the chin. Was this a standard practice in the AEF? Here are some pics.

I don't know that slitting the chin strap was "common" but, I have seen a few like this before. Nice BRO helmet!

Big Red One...the 1st Infantry Division

Although, as those who wear a uniform are often known for their bitching and grumbling in an affectionate manner, there have been other connotations of the Big Red One at times, lol.

Here is a period sketch by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge showing a split strap. There are several sketches in his I Was There with the Yanks on the Western Front, 1917-1919 that exhibit this modification.
