Interesting! I'll have to take a look when I get home. I was fairly certain that the AFH-1 came in considerably later as a response to combat in Vietnam, but I've certainly been wrong before! I'd certainly like to see a 1964 contract AFH!

 

Rob, you're right about the 334th's designation too. Their TO&E was "Aeroweapons Company", but they often went by "Aviation Company (Armed Helicopter)" or "Aviation Company (Attack Helicopter).

 

However, we're getting a bit off track here. I'm wondering if Grener came back to Vietnam as an aviator.

So far I have been unable to find him listed anywhere.

Take another look at Post #20. It's not a DSA number. It also ends in (X). Could this mean experimental? I'm also calling this a AFH-1 because of the thick shell. Maybe I'm wrong on that??

Okay....I found a UH-1 #66-15500 that flew with the 334th AHC that crashed in Vietnam on July 23, 1968 due to weather.
