Steindaddie Posted November 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2007 Read the linked story about this P-38 that is believed to be the oldest one around and it flew combat missions to boot. What a great piece of history to suddenly pop up. I'm going to the beach and see where my P-38 is hiding. http://www.imperialvalleynews.com/index.ph...24&Itemid=1 (If I were still flying the mighty C-130 Herk-a-bago I'd be thinking of ways to dismantle that P-38 for a clandestine mission terminating in my garage.) BEAST Posted November 16, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 16, 2007 My dad worked with a WWII pilot by the name of Wayne Rothgeb. Several years ago, I interviewed him and discussed his wartime experiences. One of the aircraft he flew was a P-38F. In 1943 he blew a turbocharger and had to make an emergency landing. Fast forward to the late 1970s, he was contacted by his former CO and told that they found the aircraft. His first question was "am I in trouble and will I have to pay for it?"! Later on Wayne wrote a book on his experiences titled "Under New Guinea Skies". More can be read about his aircraft at http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/p-38/42-12647.html. rrobertscv Posted November 16, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 16, 2007 The news just did a story on this. They said the pilot survived, but was killed 3 months later in N. Africa.
ww2vault Posted November 16, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 16, 2007 This story has already been posted under the Misc. section, but this thread seems to be getting more attention then the other one. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...showtopic=12135 - Jeff
