High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings;

Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I've chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

where never lark, or even eagle flew;

and while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

people attempt to adapt the world to themselves.All progress,

Hello

Do Canadian modern SOF use WWII pattern patch of FSSF?

I found a photo from Afghanistan showing coaltion SOF soldiers: French, Canadian and Australian.

The Canadian soldier in the middle has a patch which looks similar to FSSF patch!

Any comments?

the funny thing about this patch is that the gray parts are reflective!!! I guess thats why there gray. I went to take a photo of this thing and it would not work at all. The back is velcro, so no back photos, and its a flat edge. It was made in kandahar.

I have had this patch many years and have showed it to many experts but have not had good answer even from specialists in the 1st Special Service unit. The patch is jacket size and made on silk. What made me think it was related to the unit is the fact it is a Black Devil not Red and has almost identical design as the Christmas menue front page that has been illustrated in the Trading Post and in earlier post showing Riker case with picture and patches by Doyler. Here it is. What are thoughts? Much of the black on the devil has been lost to my carelessness. Mortpost-565-1325714066.jpg

When the FSSF broke up, man members went to the new 474th Inf. THeir SSI is shown in this subject in red. One of my insignia guides shows that there is also a BLUE version of the 474. What is the significance of the blue version ???Was it actually worn ? Any info is appreciated

The blue version wasn't worn. I don't know if the reason for the blue version is known for sure. Probably just a manufacturer's error. Personally, I think they have a "Patch King" origin to them. Years ago, I obtained a few from an old Patch King source. As Patch King had many different patches produced, they probably had this one produced as well.

I don't know if the patch being worn in Afghanistan has been explained here. In the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, the Delta Force and the Canadian Joint Task Force 2 were assigned a mission. It caused an uproar in Canada when some pictures of the Canadian troops were published because the Defense Minister forget to tell the Prime Minister and Parliament that the Task Force was operating in Afghanistan.

Cool info.

I sure wouldnt have wanted to be at that meeting when they explained how they "forgot" to inform the PM and Parliment

I also had this patch a few years ago, but found no further research that would ID the patch to a unit.

Abeautiful FSSF collection. Thanks for sharing it with us. I picked up an OLD blue version og the 474 Inf SSI at the SOS last weekend. I too am having a hard time getting a reason for it. It's construction looks like most other WWll patches. Has anyone ever seen photographic evidence of it being worn ? How far back was the patch king. Seems I remember them from the 60's. Any info is appreciated. PS I also saw a couple of Kiska Task Force patches with the tip of the dagger dyed red which I am told was an individual action by the owner.
