Navy Cross Recipients

Hello to all.

I´m from Germany and I´m working on a database about Navy Cross recipients beginning with WW2. I will try to complete the names with the dates of birth and death.

It is very interesting for me to see who is still alive as today. And perhaps somebody is also interested in this topic and can help me ?

I will start with the multiple recipients. There are around about 300 persons who were awarded with the Navy Cross for two times or more.

At the moment I´ve 13 open names, but I´ve some persons where I´ve no date of birth, so I can´t check them.

3 Navy Crosses

Stanley Winfield Vejtasa ( * 27.07.1914)

George Edward Ferguson ( * ??.??.????)

2 Navy Crosses

Donald Joseph Melvin (* 10.12.1911)

Eugene R. Hanson (* 16.05.1917)

John Thomas Maloney (* 10.06.1920)

Ray Joseph Stacy (* 20.05.1922)

Joseph Brokaw Geisler (* ??.??.????)

Kenneth Charles Hall (* ??.??.????)

Charles Herman Mester Jr. (* ??.??.????)

Robert Salisbury Nesbitt (* ??.??.????)

William C. Raposa (* ??.??.????)

Harold John Smith (* ??.??.????)

Paul Hobart Whitford (* ??.??.????)

Hello Ingo,

That's an interesting research project and one that will take some digging. I found one recipient's b-day by first finding a listing for his Navy Cross Award and seeing his hometown listed, then I went to Ancestry.com and did a search on his name with Virginia as a parameter. Looks like he's still alive in VA and he was born on 8 Nov. 1924.

Attached is a printout from Ancestry.

Good luck on your endeavor and welcome to the Forum!

Joe

Ingo,

If you find a copy of the US Naval Academy's "Register of Alumni", you'll find many of the birth and death dates that you're looking for. Most NC recipients were officers, and many of those were Naval Academy grads. Their bios on the Register will show date of birth, and date of death.

I believe someone else was looking for the same information a couple months ago. It might be worth the time searching the forum and trying to connect with them - seems a mutual interest!

jmar, many thanks. This sounds very interesting.

Tom, can you tell me more about the US Naval Academy's "Register of Alumni" ?

Every year the Naval Academy Alumni Association publishes a "Register of Alumni" which gives information on every USNA graduate since 1845. Each entry shows USNA class number, name, final rank, date of birth, date of death, and awards. There are MANY NC recipients in the book!!

I think there's already an online site that provides names of all NC recipients.

Yes, you can find all dates about these persones on the net, but the problem are the dates of birth and death. So I´m trying to collect them.

Did somebody have infos about George Edward Ferguson ? I think he is not still alive and Vejtasa is the last living recipient who was awarded with the Navy Cross for three times.

@teufelhunde.ret

On your link I can´t find any infos for me. But many thanks.

@pchepurko

The book is unknown for me. Are there any date of birth inside ? At the moment the Marine Corps is the main problem for me.

One source book you need to obtain for your project is Planchet Press publication #60 of 1995, edited by the late Colonel A.F. Gleim. It's titled "Navy Cross Awards for WWII", and lists 3958 entries. Of this total, 2882 are Navy awards, 1034 are to the USMC, 6 to the Coast Guard, 15 to the US Army, 2 US civilian awards, and 19 to various foreign personnel.

With the cronological order I´m now in November 1942. Untill this date I´ve 1.035 awards. From these I´ve today 99 open names, 49 of them are without date of birth, so I can´t check them. 50 could be still alive.

99 open names from more than 1.000 are less than 10 percent. I´m on a good way.
