Bill Posted November 20, 2011 Share #28 Posted November 20, 2011 The armor units ? the 2nd armored division ? These barracks, filled with ghosts of soldiers past. Not sure what Armor units were out there. Obviously not a Division, maybe some detachment to support the schools.

memphismeister Posted November 20, 2011 Share #30 Posted November 20, 2011 May we kindly ask where you got this from ? From a data base concerning the deaths of Vietnam veterans. The data base contains both rank and MOS of those who passed away. I limited the query to only Army Spec 5 and up and only MOS in the 11B faimily. There was only 1 Spec 6 with a 11B mos who died in Vietnam. As a side note I am working with 2 data bases to extract statistics that we dont generally see posted on the web or mentioned in documents. patches Posted November 21, 2011 Share #33 Posted November 21, 2011 Not sure what Armor units were out there. Obviously not a Division, maybe some detachment to support the schools. Well in the 50s up to 1965 you had at one point the 3rd Inf Div followed by the 2nd Inf Div, which was joined by the reactvated 11th Abn Div, with the`11th Abn Div it was redisignated as Air assault droping its Airborne designator, however it was only about brigade stregnth in accual size. It was at these barracks that some elemnets of these units must have been stationed.
memphismeister Posted November 21, 2011 Share #34 Posted November 21, 2011 Interresting, could you direct us to the site, from what I found the virtual wall does not appear to have a search by rank feature. i would really like to see more of the 72 Spec 5s and the one Spec 6. ok heres the catch, your right there is no search by rank. you have to be creative. pop me off an email and i can send you one list that I work fromI am still crossing over information but I find the army rank i m interested in the query my file on mos, I then just look at home town and panel number and unti information to make sure I have a match from this link. http://thewall-usa.com/index.asp#search then I take the name to the virtual wall to make sure I have the correct profile. PS You also have to check if they were not posthumsly promoted

seanmc1114 Posted November 21, 2011 Share #38 Posted November 21, 2011 Concerning the SP5 KIA's in Vietnam, I'm not suggesting the listings are incorrect, but what stands out to me is the variance in the MOS's. Someone with a better understanding of the designators may want to chime in, but I have found the following to illustrate my point: Enlisted codes consisted of five digits. The first three (e.g., 11B) indicated the position while the fourth and fifth indicated the relative level: xxx10 - basic Infantryman (E1-E3) = 11B10 xxx20 - specialist (Specialist 4th Class, E-4) = 11B20 (Note: some SP5s were 20s, e.g., 63B20, 91B20, 94B20) xxx30 - team leader, specialist (E-5) = 11B30 (A number of SP5 positions had "30" MOS codes, including 64C30). xxx40 - noncommissioned officer (Sergeant E-5, Staff Sergeant E-6, Sergeant First Class E-7) = 11B40 xxx50 - senior noncommissioned officer (E-8, E-9) = 11B50 (or, as we shall see, 11B5M, first sergeant) I don't think there should be any 11B10 or 11B20 Specialist 5's and I don't think I have ever seen a reference to an 11B30. The other member is sending me a partial list of those Spec 5s KIA, I have a therory that may be born out to some degree as why an 11B or 11C would be holding A Specialist 5 class rank. the listings what i'm seeing is most of this Spec5s are either Green Berets or Door gunners, it would seem the at least one of the MOSs that are croping up are the 11B2F which is apperently for non aviation trained Door gunners, others membrers will study this more it is know that some Spec 5s had been tanlk crewmen here this was at a time that tank crew shared the 11 series MOSs with the infantry branches, the tankers holding the MOS 11E. I would suspect a great many of these Spec 5s where those soldiers while holding an 11B MOS where those who where NOT working in their MOS in a rilfle platoon but where rather in the Headquarters Platoon within a Rifle company working in some other capacity when killed., same in those higher command units. Tanker1 Posted November 21, 2011 Share #42 Posted November 21, 2011 FYI Senior drivers and gunners were promoted to Sp5 in tank units. A command track gunner was usually a SGT and asistant tank commander. I was promoted to SP5 in 1966 as a senior tank driver and lateral to SGT when I was placed in a tank commander slot. So with a lot of experienced or senior tank crews like in Europe, it would not be unusual to have a SP5 gunner, a SP5 driver, a SSG tank commander and a PFC or maybe even a SP4 as a loader. It all depended on the senority of the crewmen available. In Nam I had a SP5 gunner, a SP4 driver and a SP4 loader for a time and then ended up with a SP4 gunner and PFCs for my loader and driver. 11Es had a high percentage causalty rate in Nam, maybe due to many of them being door gunners and the fact most of us had 11B as a secondary. I knew several tankers who were assigned as Infantry in Nam. A good friend of mine was a 11E tank driver in my platoon in Germany and ended up Infantry in the 196th in Nam. Jim Very informative direct from the sourse, see I was aware of tankers that could be Spec 5s, I knew this from resarching Tank crewmen that where killed.for some reason studying armor and tank crewmen is not as prolific as say Special Ops, aviation and Infantry Also I,ve know for a little over 30 years that you had the the only Medal of Honor awarded to a tank crewman, one Dwight Johnson a black tank crewman in the 1st BN 69th Armor, 4th Inf Division, he, a living reciepent being a Spec 5, he was a driver and held that Spec 5 rank at the time of the action on 13 January 1968 and was not promoted after the fact from E-4 to E-5. Thanks again for being there.
BEAR Posted November 22, 2011 Share #45 Posted November 22, 2011 In the 50s and 60s when Specialist 4-9 were still around, how common was it to find 11B's with a Specialist rank. I assume SP4's and SP5's were common, but what about Spec 6s and 7s. I know no solider ever made it to Spec 8 or 9, but I would think that finding an E-6 or E-7 that wasn't an NCO in the Infantry would be rare. Were radiomen condsidered 11Bs? I would understand them being Specialists since you don't really need NCO training to operate a radio. In the 20+ years that I served as an Airborne grunt I never saw or heard of a SP5 or higher in a 11B slot. Lots of Speedy Fours. The Corporal (E4)was being phased out and the only way you made Corporal was by being busted from a higher NCO grade. Fortunately the Army saw the light and the Corporal has made a come back. When I was promoted to SP4 I was nothing more than glorified PFC. We wearers of the "Sham shield" were not NCOs so we couldn't responsible for anything and we were too high a rank to pull the crap details, a perfect rank for doing nothing (almost). When my chain of command decided to give me more responsibility they made me an "AJ" (Acting Jack aka Acting Sergeant). I wore the stripes, I had the authority (and got the blame) but I didn't get the pay. After a few months I was promoted to a "hard striper". Favorite question on NCO promotion boards: If there is a group of soldiers consisting of four SP7s, three SP6s, two SP5s and a Corporal E4, who would be in charge? Answer: The Corporal ... because he is an NCO. BEAR

This list that Memphismeister has painstakingly put up speaks for itself, but from what I and all the rest of the EX stumpjumpers from the 60s up till the early 80s know that there would Never be an 11B or 11C E-5 with the rank of Spec 5 in any slot within a Rifle platoon or Weapons platoon, the KEY words are RIFLE AND WEAPONS PLATOON. From looking at the UNITS of the listed men with Spec 5 ranks holding a 11 series Infantry MOSs I see many of them where in Aviation units and Air Cav units with a great many in MACV /Special Forces some are in units other than infantry like at least on in a engineer unit, one in a Supply & Transportation Battalion and two or three in Engineer units even one in a transportaion Battlion with yet another in a ARTY unit with still another in a Military Intelligence battalion, this obviously means that they where not in a rifle platoon, with some of them being in these units other than infantry, they are still holding the 11B series MOSs but are in these units in some other capacity and are no longer working in their MOS and have not been offcialy reclassified. the other special MOSs like that 11B2F for instance would be for non aviation trained Door Gunner, as most of you know the bulk of Door Gunners where trained helicopter mechanics who would fly with the birds they where in charge of as crewchiefs, this was part of their job. There are a quite a few that where in Rifle companies and or Air Cavalry troops, here I'll wager that they where over in Headquarters platoon again, not working in their MOSs, one guy was in Headquarters, Headquarters of the 1st Brigade 1st Air Cavalry Division same deal not working in his MOS. In these cases it's easy to see that if a E-4 was coming down for promotion, because of his new found position which would not require a leadership slot or if so one was not available at the time of promotion, then a promotion to grade of E-5 with the rank of Specialist 5th Class would not be out of line or out of the ordinary. what sort of jobs could a soldier with an 11B or C MOS be doing in the HQ Platoon of a rilfle company ? quite a few, to include Armourer, Supply, Truck and or Jeep driver, Truck and or Jeep mechcanic, Clerk/Typist, an additional Radio Operator/Signalman. In each case these men would not be branch school trained but where picked by merit in most cases with the confidence that they can learn and cope with these new responsibilities, for instance you would not see a problem child in a line platoon taken out and be given the all important position of company clerk now would we. Well, it's not always as simple as it seems. Personnel can't be promoted and assigned to any position willy-nilly. There has to be a vacancy for them somewhere in the TO & E. If the TO & E called for a hard-stripe E-5 (Sergeant), the person filling that slot had to be a Sergeant, NOT a SP5. IIRC, a soldier could be assigned to a slot with rank of one up or one down - for an E-5 slot, you could assign an E-4 or an E-6, but it was frowned up and generally temporary. As short of manpower as we were, I don't recall ever seeing an E-6 in an E-5 slot. The armorer, supply, driver, etc. positions mentioned, were, for the most part, part of the TO & E. But this is where it got interesting. Most of these slots called for a soldier of a particular rank and MOS. More often than not, in the infantry units I served in, these positions were filled by 11Bs because we simply didn't have the soldiers with the proper MOS. For instance: Quite often, the supply sergeant was an 11B, but his clerk might be a school trained supply-type. The guy who was performing duties as supply sergeant couldn't fill the supply sergant slot because he didn't have the MOS. So, what they did was leave him in his old slot - squad leader of 2nd squad in 2nd platoon for example, but he "performed duties" as company supply sergeant. Then, to even make it more interesting, when it came time for his annual evaluation, they had to dummy up some crap about his performance as a squad leader. Then, when he got assigned to a new unit, he probably got thrown into a squad leader position without having any real experience as one. This happened all the time in just about evey position you can imagine during my time which was 1973-1993. Hopefully it has gotten better.

My father was an E-5 sergeant in Vietnam, having graduated from the NCO course at Ft. Benning. When he was assigned to an infantry company in the 3rd Brigade 82nd Airborne in Vietnam, he was made a squad leader. Because of the way the 82nd had deployed on TDY after the Tet Offensive in February, 1968, many of its soldiers were not eligible for new tours in Vietnam. As a result, over half of the members of the brigade were returned to the U.S. over the late spring and summer of 1968. While this was going on, the brigade was also converting to a light infantry brigade which meant each infantry battalion was adding a Company D and E both from replacements as well as from its own existing assets. This was on top of the casualties the unit was suffering while in combat. At one point, my father's battalion was operating at less than half its authorized strength. As a result, there was a serious shortage of senior NCO's and he was made platoon sergeant even thought he was technically two grades below the normal rank for the position (E-7). There were also times when the platoon had no officer so he was also the acting platoon leader. After several months in the position, he was replaced by a newly arrived SSG (E-6) who had less time in the Army than my father but because he had been promoted to SSG after completing the Benning NCO course, he technically outranked my father so the company commander had no choice but to make him platoon sergeant and my father a squad leader again. None of this is reflected in my father's 201 file however. It shows his initial assignment being as a team leader followed by his being a squad leader then reverting to team leader. On paper this was correct for his grade. And he said that when he was passing through the battalion rear getting ready to come home, he saw the company roster that listed higher ranking NCO's in the positions of platoon sergeants that he had never met. He assumed they were assigned to the company but were filling some job in the rear that wasn't part of the TOE like an NCO club manager and being carried on the books as being on the field. I think I remember reading in Michael Lee Lanning's book, The Only War We Had, that when was assigned as a platoon leader with the 199th Infantry Brigade, on arriving at his company's forward firebase, his platoon sergeant and acting platoon leader was a Spec. 4 because of shortages. Just because you filled a particular position did not mean you automatically got the rank to go with it.
patches Posted November 22, 2011 Share #50 Posted November 22, 2011 Well, it's not always as simple as it seems. This is all true in reguards to a Rifle Company in the 70s and 80s, in Vietnam it no doubt was differant in it being a matter of absolute need that troops in 11B MOSs be assigned to other duties, given the critical and chronic shortages of NCOs in Infantry units throughout the war it would seem that hard pressed COs and or 1st SGTs had no choice in most cases in assigning promising Spec 4s to other duties within the HQ platoon, I also would suspect that a far amount of these 11Bs that went over to HQ platoon may have had some kind of profile that prohibted them from further campaigning. Usually, if not all the time the men being assigned to those positions, would be chosen for these positions at their present rank, the rank they have at the time of their new assignment, they would not I imagine be simply promoted upon getting the new assignment, it would only be if they where coming down for promotions that they would be given the ranks of Spec 5 or 6 instead of a hard stripe, simply because this new assignment was not a leadership one, here the man would continue working outside his MOSs and it was in this rank in the performance of these duties when he was killed. In all those other type units, the Spec 5s with 11B are at the same time easy to explain and not so easy. the Spec5 5s in the Door Gunner slots and the Green Berets seem straight forward enough, but the several that where in units where you would not find an 11B under any circumstances being are not so straight foward, here it would be easy to explain say the couple of them that where in the Engineer units that they where assigned as a security detail, but as far as I know individual Infantrymen where not assiged to security duties with these type of units but rather an entire unit from an adjacent infantry unit, normally a platoon, here where would be assigned to the enigneer unit but mirly attached for however long and if one of the Grunts was killed while being attached with his platoon to this Engineer unit his unit listing would be his parent unit say in example B co 1/5 INF 25th INF DIV not the engineer Battalion or Company. There is at least one 11B Spec 5 that was in a Transportation Battalion, he was killed in a convoy ambush, here I believe that 11Bs where assigned to these Transportation Battalion on a perminate bases as Machine gunners on those deuce and a half's supplementing the Transportation troops in manning the MGs with these troops having the same kind of poromtional slots as the Door gunners on choppers.
