hirsca Posted August 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2011 Estate sale find today. Can someone please take a look at these and give me an opinion if they are original WW2 or not? Thanks, Al Hirschler in Dallas.

hirsca Posted August 13, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted August 13, 2011 Yep, they are original WWII Thank you Paul C. Do you know why the finish is so irregular on the reverse? Was the sterling coated with some sort of laquer that gradually wears off? I have a set of WW2 Army 1st Lt. bars with the same mottling. Thanks again, Al. horsa Posted August 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2011 Some of the badges had "frosting," which I suppose was supposed to prevent tarnishing of the sterling. You have some fine wings there, and estate sales are generally the safest place to buy militaria. It often comes with a story too. which is good. Most fakes I see are sold by dealers. Some are really slippery, mixing genuine and authentic items. My favorites are the ones on Ebay, some of whom have feminine-sounding handles like "geraldinesdolls" but when you check their current and past auctions, only sell militaria; I suppose "fredsfunkyfakes" wouldn't do. Good luck on the hunt.
