Post Your WWI Collar Disk

I swore when I started collecting I wouldn't try to find variations of this and that, but I have blatantly tossed that promise aside! Just amazing how many little nuances you can find in even the same branch.

I know exactly what you mean. Originally I set out to collect just the basic disks and try to cover each branch of service possible. That changed to completing a set of lettered infantry disks and then artillery. One thing is for sure, there are plenty to collect.

Hello everyone again. Here's my recent pick up for the collection, an enlisted band collar disk I was able to get from suwaneetrader.

Thanks,

Mike

A while back I posted my small collar disk collection. Someone requested that I posted pics of the backs. Here they are, so enjoy.attachicon.gifphpCWsV2aPM.jpgattachicon.gifphpAkC7YNPM.jpg

If I may add this great photo of an example of a highly shined US collar disc's relief, the Soldier is of the 101st Inf 26th Div. At very first glance it almost appears as one of those late 40s USAF transitional pierced U.S. discs.

Well it has been awhile since I have posted and it's time to catch up with a few neat disks that I have picked up since my last post.

And the last one. I have been looking for one of these since I started focusing more on collar disks. Here is a German made US button style collar disk. The nut is interesting in the fact it looks like half of a bobbin that threads on to the post and the back is marked "EXTRA FEIN".

Thanks for looking,

Mike

Thanks Brian and I fear that it is too late for that. I just added 2 more this morning and think that brings my total to 103 WWI disks with no end in sight. And that's fine by me, I like a challenge.

Also if anyone has anything interesting that I haven't shown here, please feel free to post some photos, I especially like seeing the different variations and the hallmarked disks.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello,

I don't really collect these, but I picked this one collar disc up. It's pretty beat, but I noticed there was a star hallmark on the back. Does anyone have info on who manufactured these with the star hallmark? Thanks much!

Here is my best WW1 disc. It's from an enlisted Air Observer uniform I did an article on for the AAMUC Footlocker. The wings and globe are applied by wire thru a hole in the center of the disc. I believe it is French made. There are no manufacturer’s marks on the disc and unfortunately there was no name in the uniform.

Spearhead - if I recall correctly, the star is a Horstmann maker-mark. I have a few QM discs with this as well. Anyone out there please correct me if I'm wrong.

Spearhead, I also have a disk with the star mark. I have looked around and cannot find the original post I made where someone ID'd the maker. I'm inclined to think Major Z is correct. I will dig around when time permits and see if I can locate it.

Dan, that's a beautiful disk, thanks for sharing it. I find them with the devices applied in this manner extra appealing.

Thank you guys for sharing,

Mike

Thanks for sharing that, I cannot recommend this book or the 1907-1999 version enough. And if you are lucky enough to have the set, the books by LaFramboise are great as well if you are an insignia collector. There is also a paperback book written by a gentleman whose name escapes me at this minute. It has a bunch of line drawings of different disks and a number of charts that break down what is known to exist among numbered disks. Does anyone know the name of the book and author that I am talking about?

Thanks,

Mike
