Mitter2k1 Posted October 15, 2014 #251 Posted October 15, 2014 I swore when I started collecting I wouldn't try to find variations of this and that, but I have blatantly tossed that promise aside! Just amazing how many little nuances you can find in even the same branch. I know exactly what you mean. Originally I set out to collect just the basic disks and try to cover each branch of service possible. That changed to completing a set of lettered infantry disks and then artillery. One thing is for sure, there are plenty to collect. Mike
Mitter2k1 Posted October 22, 2014 #252 Posted October 22, 2014 Hello everyone again. Here's my recent pick up for the collection, an enlisted band collar disk I was able to get from suwaneetrader. Thanks, Mike
patches Posted February 11, 2015 #253 Posted February 11, 2015 A while back I posted my small collar disk collection. Someone requested that I posted pics of the backs. Here they are, so enjoy.phpCWsV2aPM.jpgphpAkC7YNPM.jpg If I may add this great photo of an example of a highly shined US collar disc's relief, the Soldier is of the 101st Inf 26th Div. At very first glance it almost appears as one of those late 40s USAF transitional pierced U.S. discs.
Mitter2k1 Posted March 20, 2015 #254 Posted March 20, 2015 Well it has been awhile since I have posted and it's time to catch up with a few neat disks that I have picked up since my last post. Mike
Mitter2k1 Posted March 20, 2015 #255 Posted March 20, 2015 And the last one. I have been looking for one of these since I started focusing more on collar disks. Here is a German made US button style collar disk. The nut is interesting in the fact it looks like half of a bobbin that threads on to the post and the back is marked "EXTRA FEIN". Thanks for looking, Mike
gomorgan Posted March 20, 2015 #256 Posted March 20, 2015 Great pics Mike was a pleasure to have you over to the house last week and compare disks, keep digging and I'll keep eye open for you and see you at the end of June...George
Mitter2k1 Posted March 20, 2015 #257 Posted March 20, 2015 Thanks George and a big thanks to you and your wife for adopting me for the weekend. I had a great time and I really enjoyed seeing so many amazing things firsthand. I'll see you in June. Thanks again, Mike
BROBS Posted March 21, 2015 #258 Posted March 21, 2015 Wow Mike, I really like the odd ones like that German made "Extra Fein" button version!!! your collection of disks is going to be HUGE pretty soon.... -Brian
Mitter2k1 Posted March 21, 2015 #259 Posted March 21, 2015 Thanks Brian and I fear that it is too late for that. I just added 2 more this morning and think that brings my total to 103 WWI disks with no end in sight. And that's fine by me, I like a challenge. Also if anyone has anything interesting that I haven't shown here, please feel free to post some photos, I especially like seeing the different variations and the hallmarked disks. Thanks, Mike
cthomas Posted March 22, 2015 Author #260 Posted March 22, 2015 Mike - Off the top of my head, I have two marked aviation discs that fit your request. Take a look... -Chuck
gunbunnyB/3/75FA Posted March 22, 2015 #261 Posted March 22, 2015 WOW! gotta love that aviation section, signal corps disk, i'd heard about it, but never even saw a picture of it, till now, keep up the great work guys,
Mitter2k1 Posted March 22, 2015 #262 Posted March 22, 2015 Those are awesome Chuck! Thanks for sharing them. -Mike
Spearhead Posted March 22, 2015 #263 Posted March 22, 2015 Hello, I don't really collect these, but I picked this one collar disc up. It's pretty beat, but I noticed there was a star hallmark on the back. Does anyone have info on who manufactured these with the star hallmark? Thanks much!
dan Posted March 23, 2015 #264 Posted March 23, 2015 Here is my best WW1 disc. It's from an enlisted Air Observer uniform I did an article on for the AAMUC Footlocker. The wings and globe are applied by wire thru a hole in the center of the disc. I believe it is French made. There are no manufacturer’s marks on the disc and unfortunately there was no name in the uniform.
Major Z Posted March 24, 2015 #265 Posted March 24, 2015 Spearhead - if I recall correctly, the star is a Horstmann maker-mark. I have a few QM discs with this as well. Anyone out there please correct me if I'm wrong.
Mitter2k1 Posted March 25, 2015 #266 Posted March 25, 2015 Spearhead, I also have a disk with the star mark. I have looked around and cannot find the original post I made where someone ID'd the maker. I'm inclined to think Major Z is correct. I will dig around when time permits and see if I can locate it. Dan, that's a beautiful disk, thanks for sharing it. I find them with the devices applied in this manner extra appealing. Thank you guys for sharing, Mike
Usa1918 Posted April 11, 2015 #268 Posted April 11, 2015 In case anyone is looking for a copy of Scipios Book: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Book-E-M-Collar-Insignia-1907-1926-by-Scipio-/351342304997?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51cda21ee5 He has 4 copies left Keith
Mitter2k1 Posted April 11, 2015 #269 Posted April 11, 2015 Thanks for sharing that, I cannot recommend this book or the 1907-1999 version enough. And if you are lucky enough to have the set, the books by LaFramboise are great as well if you are an insignia collector. There is also a paperback book written by a gentleman whose name escapes me at this minute. It has a bunch of line drawings of different disks and a number of charts that break down what is known to exist among numbered disks. Does anyone know the name of the book and author that I am talking about? Thanks, Mike
