Thank you very much for the information. It is much appreciated

Here's some basic contract number info that I copied from somewhere else. I keep it in a notepad text file on my computer that I can easily access when needed:

Military procurement was done through the Defense Supply Agency 1962-1977 and all contracts had a DSA prefix. The dates were by fiscal year...July 1 through June 30. Fiscal year 1962 had a DSA 1 prefix and E-62 suffix. 1963 and 1964 were the same but substitute "63" or "64" in the suffix. Fiscal year 1965 will just have the DSA 1 prefix and no date code. Fiscal year 1966 will have a DSA 100 prefix and no date code. Starting in 1967 there will be a DSA 100 prefix plus a two digit date code. So, for example, fiscal year 1968 contracts will have a DSA 100-68 prefix.

Contract numbers

WW2 - 195? no prefix - Contract for U.S Marine Corps (BuSandA symbol, stamped in sleeve)

1946 - 195? "Supply Department of the United States Marine Corps" and date (stamped in sleeve)

Fiscal year 1965-66.

It will be fiscal year 1965 which is 1964-1965. I think the fiscal year ran from the first of July to the following end of June.

I have a set of pants from mid 80's made by Winfield that have a DRA or DBA xxxx 87 xxxxx , they are Black 100% cotton ripstop with gas flaps.

Is this military or Police contracted with the DRA/DBA (tag little fuzzy so can't make it out 100%)

Stock numbers

195? - 1956 example of stock number "72-R-307-112" ????

1957 – 1975 FSN (Federal stock number), 11-digit number

1975 – present NSN (National stock number), 13-digit number[/b]

Just to give some clarification on "stock numbers" as the dates are all incorrect:

The first stock number listed, "72-R-307-112", is often referred to as a Quartermaster Stock Number [QSN]. It was actually established as part of the Treasury Department's mandated cataloging system in 1943. I believe the first publication to list the QSNs for clothing and individual equipment was the 1946 QMC [reprints are available everywhere]. The earliest item I have seen with a QSN is a 1949 dated contract item [there may be earlier dated items as I do not collect items from the period of time when this "stock number" was being utilized]. So the "adoption" date range for the first "stock number" should be 1943 - 1953. The "fuctional" date range should be 194? - 1954

The second "stock number", the Federal Stock Number [FSN], was introduced in 1953 "as part of the Defense Cataloging And Standardization Act in an effort to implement the concept of a single-item identification number [e.g., all standard 40-watt light bulbs with same function, regardless of manufacture, were assigned the same FSN]." The earliest item I have seen with a FSN is a 1954 dated contract M-1952 flak jacket. So the "adoption" date range for the second "stock number" should be 1953 - 1973. The "functional" date range should be 1954 - 1974.

The third "stock number", the National Stock Number [NSN], was proposed in 1973 to add two additional digits to the FSN to indicate the country of origin - this code is called the National Codification Bureau Code [NCB]. This was done to make the US NSN in compliance with the NATO Stock Numbering system. The system was officially adopted on 30 September 1974. The earliest item I have seen with a NSN are the 1974 dated contract ALICE system items. So the "adoption" date range for the third "stock number" should be 1973 - present. The "functional" date range should be 1974 - present.

On a side note for items with a NSN - the second set of digits helps identify not only the country of origin, but in the case of US items, when the item was originally type classified and assigned a stock number. Example: [1] 8465-00-001-6482 - the "00" indicates the item is from the United States, but it also indicates the item was type classified prior to 1973. [2] 8415-01-183-6425 - the "01" indicates the item is from the United States but it also indicates the item was type classified after 1973.

Hope this helps.

I may be trying to read something in that is not there. I just got an Army overcoat and liner yesterday. Both the liner and coat have DSA 100-4179. This is FY66 right? Is the year code always 2 digits immediately after the 100 such as 67, 69, 70 and so on? The FSN on both liner and jacket match and it is in really nice shape. Thanks in advance, Dave

The Federal Fiscal Year run 1 October through 30 September.

Let me correct my error- from 1976-now the FY is 1 OCT through 30 SEP.

Prior to that it was 1 July to 30 June since the 1840's.
